You sound as though every player on the squad has tried to screw him over. The truth is only a few players have compromised their integrity. The rest have lived up to their agreement with Jones. If you would have said not too many people like Jones I would agree with you but the majority who do business with him respect his generosity even though it is one of his weaknesses. I think this holds up with the rest of the league when it comes to the business side. The area that Jones loses respect is his lack of football judgement.

Not questioning that but the point is all of the recipients of his poor decisions don't turn around and screw him further. Ratliff absolutely abused Jerry and the old fool set a bad precedent for the whole franchise by not retaliating with litigation. Now everyone who wants out is following the same pattern-- feigning injury, retirement, swine flu, whatever.

Orton collected his salary and guaranteed money, escaped his contract for free, and now is free to start for anyone. Another team can pay a smaller salary too since Jerry's already fronted the bonus.

Jones has put out a lot of extreme contracts. Most players are thrilled to get them and most keep their end of the agreement. Even if it is a problem for him to offer dumb contracts the dishonesty doesn't lie in the offer. It lies with the party who isn't content getting a good deal but decides it okay to steal. Just because you leave your door unlocked that doesn't mean you are inviting you neighbors to help themselves to your property. I'm talking about dishonesty not stupidity.

It makes even less sense then, if he's really retired. Dallas should have either gotten their signing bonus money back or placed Orton on the reserve/retired list to retain his rights. If Orton really wanted to retire, then he shouldn't care whether or not he's on the r/r list.

When Orton gets "talked out" of retirement and comes back to play for some team later this season, it will be just as humiliating as playing against Ratliff was last year.
