That’s not what the American Revolution was about. At all. In fact, many of our founding fathers were incredibly wealthy.

Unfortunately, Americans at the time did not have the luxury of signaling their virtue against the elites, There would never have been a revolution without them.

Many key leaders were wealthy elites:


• John Hancock: One of the richest merchants in New England; inherited a major import-export business.


• Robert Morris: Often called the richest man in America by 1775; a merchant and financier who personally bankrolled much of the war effort.


• George Washington: Wealthy Virginia planter with tens of thousands of acres, expanded through land speculation and marriage.


• Benjamin Franklin: Self-made but became extremely successful as a printer, publisher, and land speculator—one of the wealthiest Americans.


• Other prominent figures like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were from the planter elite.

That’s how both parties shirk the laws. Rather than actually follow them, just either break them outright and blame the other side for putting them in place, or manipulate the system to replace the lawmakers and the rewrite them entirely.
