Pick 92: Jaishawn Barham EDGE/ILB/OLB

I think the Cowboys have sort of downplayed the green dot thing importance. That it's really just a matter of relaying the call in. I think perception is that the green dot guy has to be the leader of the defense. But sometimes it's just a guy capable of relaying a call.

If we didn't have a guy like Downs who can play traffic cop I'd be more worried, but with him on the field I'm not that concerned with who ends up being the green dot.

It could be Thompson for all I care, although I know that's unlikely.

I think the other part is it needs to be a guy who basically never comes off the field.

A little interesting that when Barham was asked who his favorite LBs were, one of the three he mentioned was "Azeez from Houston" (besides Ray Lewis and Fred Warner). Not bad considering that's who we tried to trade for.

Schottenheimer addressed the green dot today. He said they're going to train several players on it and see who takes to it the best.

He mentioned Overshown, Thompson and Winters by name as possibilities, and "whoever else".

The idea of the importance of the "green dot" has kind of been blown out of proportion. The actual important thing is to have a field general in the middle of the field who can get guys lined up, which is Downs whether or not he's the one directly receiving the calls in his helmet.

Often times that and the green dot are the same player just because teams with smart LB's default to that, but Downs is such an outlier in terms of intelligence and seeing the game that it's kind of irrelevant for us specifically.

Good to have redundancy in any case. I imagine Winters will get it, though the team would like it to be Downs.

Absolutely in a far batter place now than at this time last year. Still have to see it materialize on the field, but the potential is grounded in proven experience and solid pedigree vs banking everything on Overshown’s return from a terrible knee injury, a late pick in James, Loofa, and the fading, Mazi-esque Murray and Sanborn.

If it were me I'd make it Thompson, I believe Kearse was the green dot for at least a year or two under Quinn.
