Phillips: Why I’m Rethinking the Josh Brent Situation

Brent is not irreplaceable. The fact that we're even entertaining the idea of his return tells you how far this franchise has fallen. We can't find a so-so DT who hasn't killed someone?

That's a whole different argument and I initially agreed with you but since Jerry Brown's mother asked for him to get a second chance I'm more inclined to go with what the victim's family wishes.

I'm sure that will be of great comfort to Brown's family. And yes, his death was very avoidable.

Browns family has been 100% behind Brent through the entire process. I don't think you would be hurting their feelings in any way to let him play football again. In my opinion his family is the only one that should be taken into consideration.

What makes you think I'm defending the Rams? They're just as amoral and mercenary as Jerry.

Where is the amorality and mercenary in this? The man made a tragic mistake and paid the debt society demanded. When is giving someone a second chance a mercenary act. I detest drunk drivers but once they have squared the debt they have done all they can. I think it is more tragic to send young men into a hopeless war than what you are depecting.

Mama Brown doesn't make personnel decision for the Cowboys. Jerry's just using her as a shield against criticism if he brings Brent back. He should thank her for her magnanimous gesture but tell her "no, Brent has no future in Dallas."

There are 31 other teams to give him a second chance. We gave him multiple chances and he blew it. Time to move on.

Right.

Why exactly should he do that? Brown's best support system would almost certainly be in Dallas. His talent would help Dallas.

I'm just wondering why Dallas would be such a poor place for him?

I never have understood why people don't want convicts to be able to get a job when they get out. What do thay want them to do then? Sell dope?

because he's worn out his welcome here. because we're (hopefully) not a mercenary outfit. because we stuck with him through the failed drug tests but vehicular homicide is a bridge too far. because he's not talented enough to justify retaining him. shall I go on?

Let's not forget all the failed drug tests, too. I just don't think he's worth it.

I guess I should read the whole thread before posting. Time. Stamped.

I think he has only worn out his welcome with you, otherwise he hasn't. The owner, players and family of the victim has shown no signs that he has worn out his welcome. If he is more talented then the worst D-line on our roster then he is absolutely worth having on the roster in my opinion.

yes, I have standards and values. sue me.

The owner, players and family of the victim has shown no signs that he has worn out his welcome.

and therein lies the tragedy

you're an "anything goes" kinda guy. i'm not. so there you go.

You can have a team of Tim Tebow's.

I'll take the team and players who will win me games.

oh, that's my choice? Brent or Tim Tebow? nothing in-between? if only Antonio Bryant had killed someone instead of throwing a towel ...

Guys I think our severe shortage of talent upfront combined with debilitating injuries last year has
made us just desperate enough to consider such a player. He's the devil we know, and from a purely talent
standpoint, I think the kid has skill we could use.

Now don't be one of these.

So you don't want any drunk drivers on your team? Or only the ones who get in an accident while they are drunk? What about the ones that don't get caught drunk driving, but do?

I don't give a shit about guys off the field stuff. If they want to do coke off a strippers ass it doesn't matter to me. As long as they are on the football field on Sunday helping us win games. The only valid argument against Brent in my opinion is the drug concern. If the guy pops positive for weed he won't be on the field on Sunday.
