I get what you are saying, but that is one of the reasons I liked it. Most childhoods don't have some big narrative arc. Stuff just sorta happens and one day you are an adult.
Yes, but I didn't need a two and a half hour plus movie to tell me that. It was well made and I appreciated the effort, but I just don't get the accolades. The story needed some drama, or something to freaking happen.
The plot was so bland, you might as well consider him eating a pot brownie as a turning point.
