The director didn’t read the source material and it shows. Instead he just copies the Guardians of the Galaxy aesthetic ad nauseam, lazily uses a 1-dimensional caricature of a bad guy who adds nothing to the story, leans on special effects, and oh yeah, brings in Lobo.
This story is supposed to be about two women inspiring each other and maybe saving a bit of each other’s souls. I’m a girl-dad, and I want to see that work. The supporting teen actress does a good job, but they hamstring the lead actress in the main role giving here very little to do.
They show Supergirl’s origin and that is important, but even there they miss how she spent hours literally burying half the people she knew. I guess there’s not a lot of time, but these small details are important.
The crazy good art, colors, and epic moments of the original story are missing, they keep only the very surface plot elements and get lazy at many turns, ultimately devolving to petty revenge which damages the legend of the main character.
Supergirl doesn’t kill bad people, she’s supposed to
help them. Guess they didn’t trust the audience to get that message.
