I'm just making the point that it should have been obvious Choice was out of the running once it was made known what his current salary at Texas is right now.

That would make sense. College football has this whole other recruiting dynamic to coaching that really doesn't matter at all in the NFL. Of course that's becoming less important with NIL money. Who needs to recruit when you can just offer a kid a bag of cash. But there is still a fair bit of recruiting going on since these are kids.

On the first page of the thread I mentioned Adam Stenavich as a possible dark horse HC candidate, and I think prior to McCarthy leaving I mentioned him as someone I'd love as OC.

The idea was that while everybody loves to gawk at McVay/Shannahan, there is a faulty assumption that most of these cutting-edge, boy wonder offensive minds all have a QB/passing game background and focus.

The real secret to those types of offenses is having an exotic OL scheme that marries the run and pass, and muddies the ability of the defense to read run vs. pass. On top of that, Shannahan's scheme is really just an evolution of his father's scheme, which was also predicated on OL play with heavy play-action built off of it.

McVay was never a QB coach, he was a TE coach with the Skins before becoming the OC. Ben Johnson was also primarily a TE coach before he became an OC. Wes Phillips spent years as a TE coach before becoming the OC/passing game coordinator with Minnesota, even though McConnell calls the plays.

The reason for that in my opinion is that TE's are the intersection of the run and pass game. They're asked to take part in the blocking schemes as an extension of the OL, while also operating as a target in the passing game. I don't think it's a coincidence that so many of the top offensive designers around the league right now have a similar background, and that the key to their schemes often comes from being able to mix running game/passing game concepts to get defenses off balance.

All of this is to say that I was interested in Stenavich because of his OL/Shannahan/McVay type background, and while Klayton Adams wasn't really on my radar, he's also a really nice mix of a lot of similar stuff, just without the direct Shannahan/McVay exposure.

Several years as an OL coach, a few years as a TE coach, plus noted exotic/inventive run blocking schemes.

I don't really have much of a point to all of this, aside from saying that it was the exact type of hire I was hoping for at OC and the only reason I'm not legitimately optimistic is because Schottenheimer is a huge unknown (plus the usual Jerry/Stephen BS).

Yeah, he supposedly has a legit photographic memory.

But I heard an interview recently with Andrew Whitworth where he said McVay was a unicorn in terms of being a natural leader and communicator and all those things beyond Xs and Os. Said he was like that from the very beginning. Just a real rarity that you can't duplicate.

Yea I have no notions of Adams being another McVay, my point is that many of these top offensive minds cut their teeth working more with the TE's/OL, with schemes predicated on the OL play, rather than just being some fancy QB passing game shit.

That's why I was interested in Stenavich and I think Adams fits the bill as well.

Exactly, that's why for years I wanted the Shanahan/Kubiak style where basically every single play (save 3rd and 15 or something) looks like a run. That's why those simple-looking plays that hit a WR or a TE crossing back side seem to always be so open.

That was actually one of the very best things from that Schottenheimer PC, when he said we'll do a great job of marrying the run and pass and making every play look the same to the defense. Seems like when the Seahawks were rolling, Wilson did that where they stick the ball out like a handoff on almost every pass play.

Like you say, Adams may not be from that tree exactly, but that isn't the important part. The important part is making it harder for the defense to read. That will make things easier for everyone involved, receivers and Dak.

Yea McCarthy talked about doing this for a year or two after Moore left but hiring a guy like Adams is the first tangible thing I've seen that indicates they're actually trying to move in that direction with an emphasis on the run game and OL play.

Who knows if it'll work but it's encouraging at least.

Talking about running it more is one thing. Actually bringing in coaches who know how to do it is another. We will see if it all works out but at least it appears that there is an actual plan. Now they need to follow through with free agency and the draft on actually building it out. We all know Dak is a better QB when complimented by a strong run game. Hell all QBs are. But if the run game is strong, it could start to make some sense with Dak throwing the ball 20-30 times a game.

And the defense, I actually think we have some young talent, we just have to see if Eberflus is able to put it all together in a short time frame. The good news is he doesn't have an overly complicated scheme, so players should pick it up quickly.
