If you're a first round pick, I think your projection as a player is the same.

As for him being a retard, it was all off the field stuff that never impacted his play on the field. Unlike McClain who's off the field stuff directly influenced his play and caused him to retire twice.

You're all letting your JFF hate cloud your judgment when comparing the two.

I don't think so. Since day one there has been lots of doubt that he could be an effective passer in the NFL. Lots of experts have never liked the player or seriously doubted him.

McClain had a rock solid projection coming out. Yes, he became a mental case and was pretty much considered dead when the season started. I am talking about ability coming out. There is no way that Manziel was that highly regarded coming out. He is pretty much a known boom or bust.

As far as off the field stuff for Manziel - it has certainly has impacted his game. He is known to be a lazy, self centered prick who thinks he knows it all. Those aren't traits that you want in a QB. Immaturity won't get you far as an NFL QB. Just because he was able to be a kid out there in college doesn't mean that translates to the NFL game. It really doesn't translate at all. Manziel earned a reputation as a magician in his first season starting. His second season a lot of that stuff calmed down. He had a handful of highlight plays but mostly lived off of his reputation. He can run around all he wants in the NFL while enjoying a very short career. You saw it in preseason. He got planted in the face a few times and his fun was pretty much over. If he doesn't change that he will never do anything. in order for him to be good he has to do things that he has never been proven to do well. I would have hope that he would do that if he was a different person. Who he is gives me doubt.

I damnsure never counted on him being anything. I just laughed when we signed him. Then I heard he couldn't make it through practice and laughed harder.

I have never heard of Manziel as lazy way to make shit up and his 2nd year in college he showed much better aptitude in the pocket.

And as him being a self centered prick why have all of his teammates stood behind him even with all of the off field stuff I have never read anything about teammates not liking him.

I don't know if he ever makes it, but you don't have to make shit up to back up your obvious bias.

Daaaaaang, you got me there, didn't you? Yes, lots of experts liked Manziel. I think the biggest indicator was the Browns drafting him. Keep in mind that I was making a comparison between him and McClain coming out. I'd say that McClain had a clearer future according to everyone involved at the time. I guess we see how that turned out, didn't we?

That is really nice, genius...nothing must have never been said since you didn't hear it, huh? It sounds like you've got a rock solid case there. Yes, there are reports about his work ethic. He has a pretty big reputation as one of those guys who believes that he is so good that he just needs to show up when football is on and do his thang. Honestly, there is part of me that likes his rebel attitude but we've all seen those who failed and succeeded based on making being a professional QB a year round proposition. He hadn't shown the ability to be a student of the game in the film room either. Of course, lots of guys in his shoes haven't either.

I bet he is a hell of a player to be in college with and have a good time on the field with. Lets be honest though, we've heard this song and dance a thousand times before. Erbody loves to play with T.O. erbody loves them some fill in the blank. To me this is the most iron clad thing about him. It is not really an opinion if he is a self centered prick or not. He no doubt is. That alone is not damning but it is part of the overall picture.

Since his success or failure in the NFL hasn't been proven yet I'd say that your opinion is biased as well. So welcome to the awesome world of having a bias concerning Manziel.
 
I don't know whether Manziel will succeed or not, I don't even pretend to know how to scout QBs. I hated Tannehill in the draft and he's a pretty decent QB.

I'd take a flyer on him (4th round) and try to get him to mature and learn behind Romo for a couple of years. Risk: you lose a 4th rounder. Reward: you might not have to suffer through a year of Brandon Weeden starting for this team.

His rookie contract goes another 4 years (counting his 5th/option year) I doubt Romo makes it more than 2 more years. So maybe he holds the clipboard for 2 years, plays a year, we decide whether he was good enough to pick up his option.

If he won't do the work and won't put in the time, we cut him after year one and he won't be the first late round pick we've ever had bust on us.
 
All I can say is you do not take a flyer on your first round pick. With Manziels limited exposure to the game I would classify him as a gamble. If I were going to take him it wouldn't be with a lucrative contract in place.
He sits for possibly 2 to 3 years drawing first rounder pay and you still don't know if he can handle the transition to the pros. If I take a first rounder QB candidate it gong to be one who has full experience in a good system and has digested the finer points of how to manage a team.

First rounder pay with the new CBA isn't that much,

Signed a four-year, $8,247,250 contract. The deal contains $6,702,625 guaranteed, including a $4.318 million signing bonus.

Since the Browns already paid the bonus, he's getting a million a year on average. That's very affordable for a backup QB. Kyle Orton made a lot more than that here.

Okay. I agree that isn't much but to me he is still a flyer but the pay makes it a lot more attractive if you are correct.
