Machota: Jerry Jones says Cowboys are ‘in play’ to make another trade for this season

The Dallas Cowboys only have five picks in next year’s NFL Draft, but that doesn’t seem to bother Jerry Jones.

During one of his weekly radio appearances on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday morning, the Cowboys owner and general manager expressed that he has more interest in improving this year’s roster than concern over limited future picks.

The Cowboys recently restructured the contracts of defensive tackle Kenny Clark, tight end Jake Ferguson and cornerback DaRon Bland to create more salary-cap space.

While that space can also be carried over into next season, Jones sounded very interested in potentially using it this year.

“That does show that we have really viable, serious room financially to make a trade if we wanted to right now,” he said of the restructures.

Jones added that “generally speaking,” the Cowboys are “in play” to make a move and that it would probably come on defense.

More help might be necessary at pass rusher or cornerback, but inside linebacker could also be a possibility depending on how the group performs early in the season and its overall health.

Regarding not making a trade for an offensive player, Jones said the Cowboys’ “big move” was adding tackle Broderick Jones two weeks ago.

The Cowboys sent the Pittsburgh Steelers a third- and sixth-round pick for Jones and a fourth-round pick. He has been competing with Terence Steele for the starting right tackle job. Steele is expected to remain the starter, and Jones is likely to be the team’s swing tackle.
 
Trading more picks is ludicrous. We need those cheap rookie deals. I would roll all the money over to next season and dip a little more into FA.

The “Fuck Them Picks” approach is a smart concept only as long as you are able to make not only you score big on picks in the 3-7th rounds. And by hit, I mean not only do they start, they are foundations. The Rams hit on Kupp, Kyren Williams and that nut Nacua.

I doubt we could come close to pulling it off those kind of choices give. our drafting history.

I'd definitely wait a few weeks and see how the roster plays out. If they feel like there's a move that makes sense, dip into 2028.
 
Crazy talk, but could we at least wait and be sure we're, you know, a decent team first?

Agreed, plus guys like Kobie Turner and Byron Young. With that said, we're in an interesting position because we basically lucked into a young, elite player by giving up just a 3 for Pickens, so as long as they're willing to extend him I'd be fine giving up a 2028 1st for Crosby.

I want to have a pick in next year's stacked 1st, but I'd be totally fine giving up the 2028 1st, as long as they don't let Pickens walk.

I know... personally I think this is just Jerry flapping his gums to generate interest like usual. I'm just saying on the general topic, I wouldn't assume we're that close yet.
 
Crosby’s not happening. But what would you trade for Joey Porter Jr or Alex Highsmith from the Steelers? It’s Highsmith’s age 29 season and he had 10 sacks in 13 games last year.

Porter wants a new deal and could prolly be had for our remaining 1st— which is all but surely going to be a later pick. Adding Porter into our secondary immediately takes it from average to elite, and now we have cap space. If Revel grows into the player we’re hoping for in a year or two, we could release Bland.

We’re prolly drafting a CB anyway, and this time honestly I think we should if we still have that pick next Spring.
