Gotta luv the death bed gramma convo.
Liar.
The Cowboys became the first ever Wildcard playoff team to make it to the Super Bowl. They made it courtesy of a miracle play play by Roger Staubach and Drew Pearson known as “The Hail Mary.” Nate Wright, the Minnesota Vikings Cornerback who was victimized on that play lives in Tucson, Arizona and I’ve run into him a time or two. He still maintains Drew pushed off.

I was in an Art class in Junior High, and I was drawing a picture of an exciting rookie RB named Tony Dorsett. I’m not ashamed to say it was awful. I’m not an artist. A classmate friend of mine told me to draws his last name on the back of the jersey. I asked him if he was a Cowboys fan, and he replied, “You bet.”

Bonding. We were at Grandma’s and all of the grand kids except me were out swimming. I was inside watching the game. My Grandma loved bourbon, and when she was drunk, she was funny. She came by and asked me if I didn’t want to be outside swimming with the other kids. After I assured her I was right where I wanted to be she surprised the crap out of me when she sat down and said, “Explain this dumb game to me.” She had been married to a football man, and didn’t know the game. Well, I did my best to explain it to her. One thing she got right was rooting for the Cowboys with me. The play would start and she would stand up and yell, “Kill him! Break his legs!” Then she’d take another swallow of bourbon and sit down. I was roaring laughing.
Bill Bates came into the game and Madden started talking about how much Tom Landry loved this kid because he would hit anything that moved. Franco Harris took a handoff and literally ran over Bates. John Madden said, “Mr. Bates, welcome to the NFL.” My now quite inebriated Grandma said, “Shut up fat ass.” On the very next play Franco got the ball and Bates blew him up. I’m talking knocked him out of his shoes. Madden said, “Mr. Harris, welcome back to the NFL.” From that day forward my Grandma professed to be a Cowboys fan, and when we talked we always talked about how they were doing.
Heart warming.During this dry spell I also saw a legend ride off into the sunset as the team was sold, and saw something I never thought was possible. The Cowboys were the worst team in the NFL for 2 straight years. In 1988 we were summoned to New Mexico to say goodbye to Grandma because she was dying. I was the last grand kid to go into her room and see her. The Cowboys were awful in 1988 and she said, “Mikey, what are we going to do about our Cowboys?” I told her, “Don’t worry Grandma, we’re going to Draft Troy Aikman and win a couple of more Super Bowls.” She smiled and fell asleep. It was the last thing we ever said to each other. I was spoiled by winning. Many old time fans are. The Cowboys simply didn’t lose. At least, not very often.
Must. Protect. Nephews. In 1992 those winning ways returned, largely courtesy of Troy Aikman. The Cowboys were the youngest team in the NFL, and they were just exciting to watch. The big monsters on the Offensive Line opened holes for a RB named Emmitt Smith and he darted through them and made teams pay dearly for it. The opponent for Super Bowl XXVII was the Buffalo Bills, and by a fun coincidence I happened to run into Jim Kelly in Phoenix on Valentine’s Day (his birthday) at Sky Harbor Airport. The previous two seasons I had rooted for the Bills against Division rivals The New York Giants and the Washington Redskins. I have to tell you he was kind of arrogant when I met him. After he was rude to a couple of my nephews who asked him for an autograph I told him I hoped the Cowboys beat the crap out of him in the next Super Bowl.
Legit.Michael Jackson was the halftime show that year. My wife was pregnant, and due, with our first child. I begged her daily for the 2 weeks leading up to the Super Bowl that she not go into labor during the game. My heart stopped at halftime as the baby began to kick. Until we realized that she was kicking to the beat of Michael’s music. Whew.
Emotions. The next season felt even better to me. At least that is once Jerry Jones got off his wallet and signed Emmitt Smith to a contract extension. He was perhaps persuaded by an enraged Charles Haley who after the Cowboys 2nd loss to open the season, allegedly threw his helmet towards Jerry so hard that it embedded in the wall. He scowled at Jerry to get Emmitt in there. In 1992 Emmitt had done something no other RB had ever done. He led the NFL in rushing and was on a Super Bowl winner. In 1993 Emmitt did something no other RB could have done. He missed the first 2 games of the season, still led the NFL in rushing, was named the MVP, and the Super Bowl MVP. When the game was over, and Troy Aikman had indeed delivered the 2 Super Bowls I had mentioned to my dying Grandma, I was overcome by emotions. I stepped out onto the balcony of our apartment. I looked towards heaven and simply said, “Grandma, we did it.”
