Jerry Jones hints at Dallas Cowboys looking for quarterback of the future

I am not asking anyone to buy into Petty, he is Jones choice. I am saying I see enough in him to take him in the 4 th round. I think he has enough tools to be an NFL QB. And by the way he isn't a terrible QB.

Chang's career has nothing to do with any other player. Petty will have to prove himself one way or the other.

See now you're confusing the discussion. We were specifically addressing what Petty did in college because the claim was that he made poor decisions. Obviously for that offense he wasn't making poor decisions.

Now was it the system making him look that good? Very possibly. Unlike Timmy Chang and a whole list of other soft armed system QBs Bryce Petty actually has a really good arm. Hell Jon Gruden basically thinks he has the strongest arm in the draft. So lets move past the retarded comparisons to other weak armed system QBs. He isn't one of those. Could he be Rex Grossman though, it's totally possible.

With all that being said he obviously has some flaws otherwise we wouldn't be talking about him in the fourth round. We have no idea if he will be able to read a defense and go through progressions because those weren't parts of the Baylor offense. His footwork is a huge work in progress. What I saw at the senior bowl was a guy that had no timing with his receivers. Now maybe that was because he was playing in an NFL offense for the first time in his life. Or maybe it was because he just sucks and will never have that timing. The tools are there though if you think you can work with the rest.
 
I'd prefer to draft a QB in the first or second in the next couple years. Bryce Petty just doesnt tickle my fancy as a project for Dallas to take on. Poor mechanics and decision making. Kid's got a great head on his shoulders and is mobile, but I just don't think hes anything more than a good backup
 
Who's the best fit for our system? It's the same principle as we apply to potential RBs.

I agree that if Dallas wants an upper tier QB they need to pass on it this year. I am not completely sold on any of them this draft but if Dallas goes after one this season I preffer they it not be a high draft choice to obtain one. Those need to go for the defense this draft. That's why i am not opposed to taking on a project if Dallas feels they have to have on this go around. There's no one I see as a replacement candidate.

call me crazy but if mariota were somehow dropping to 27 id take my first on him or trade out of the first round completely. Obviously that wont happen.

Every year theres a third QB who makes his way into the first round in the final month before the draft a la Ryan Tannehill who actually looks the part, this year I just do not see that. The dropoff from Mariota to the next QB is incredible
 
No way Mariotta makes his way past the Eagles or Oregon East.
 
I never said Mariotta would drop that far. It was a hypothetical scenario just to express the drop-off after him for QB's this year

Exactly. Who from this class do you see leading the Cowboys deep into the playoffs in a couple of years?

Only the top guys.

But Ron Wolf develops two QBs and suddenly it's a mantra that you must draft one every year in the 4th round. That insanity is right up there with the notion of a "shutdown corner".

Doesn't exist outside a very few cases.

It's amazing how much difference a decade makes. Ten to fifteen years ago a late round/undrafted QB star was pretty standard. Developed veterans like Trent Green, Jake Delhomme, Warner, Bulger, Brunell, Hasselbeck, Jeff Garcia, and (of course) Tom Brady were showing that a starting franchise QB could develop from anywhere.

Ten to fifteen years ago it was easier to develop one. Most didn't play in spread offenses, were trained to read defenses and knew how to take snaps from center.

Now these kids are basically pitchers. They throw to a spot.

You still need to take one, either late in the draft or as an UDFA.

The length of time to groom a QB now means you need a couple of years. Either that or you wait until you are desperate.

Most won't get an Andrew Luck. Many will get a Blaine Gabbert or Blake Bortles.
