Happy Memorial Day, boys. I once knew a man (and, no, this is not some Hos story) that didn't like when people said Happy Memorial Day. He thought it was inappropriate to say happy on a day we memorialize the soldiers that have died for our country. I always thought it was curious that he felt that way. And, I have come to the understanding that he was just a bitter old man. I think it is very appropriate. I am happy they had a country that supported that which was right. I am happy that I'm able to type out this post because of their sacrifice. I'm happy they chose to serve.
And, at the same time I hurt for their families. I hurt for kids that have lost dads and moms. I hurt for entire families that have had to experience never seeing a loved one again because of the ultimate sacrifice that they gave. I can't begin to imagine what it would have to be like as a spouse knowing every time you said goodbye it might be the last time, just to one day have to experience that God forsaken moment when you get that call.
To our vets here, I appreciate and inexorably respect your sacrifice while defending this country, but this weekend isn't for you. This weekend we remember those that gave it all so we could have it all. We remember those we can't honor face to face anymore.
I woke up at 5:30 this morning and the first thing I did was flip the light on at my flagpole and raise Old Glory. It may seem silly to some, but it's an honor for me.
Salute to all of those that have sacrificed everything. Words can't really express what that means to most of us. Your ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten. At least not by this man.
