Oh it wasn't called nearly as much as now. That was my point from earlier in the thread. The penalties against DBs has increased exponentially over the last decade or so, which would skew any completion percentage stats.
 
It's my understanding that pass interference penalties do not count toward a quarterbacks passing stats. Only if the pass is completed and the penalties is declined.

The point is the penalty changes how a defensive back plays. If it's not called then a defensive back will be far more physical. Same with illegal contact. If the refs don't call it defenders will knock the crap out of receivers non stop which will lead to less efficient passing statistics.
 
Aikman's passing stats are lower than they would be if he had been good for a longer period of time. He great from 92-96, after that he was concussion prone and unproductive. Also, after Harper left he never had a legit #2 WR, then after Novachek retired he didn't even have a TE.
 
Aikman's accuracy, and the reason players like Woodson remember it, was in his ability to throw to a spot. It's the way the Norv Turner timing based offense operated. Aikman didn't throw to an open receiver. He threw to a spot where the receiver should be coming open, before the receiver made his cut.

And Aikman was extremely good at hitting those spots and reading which receiver would be the one coming open.

His timing was elite. You see some WRs come out of their breaks and they appear to be waiting for the ball. That was never the case with Aikman. The timing on his throws was flawless and that made it nearly impossible to defend him.
