I’m trying to be there at MetLife

That's basically just the 2nd round RFA tender a year early, what would be really smart is if they front loaded some of the money to this year so that his cap hit next year is less than 6.

Does it really matter. You front load it. Or the money carries over. The result is the same.

Yeah I think this was just a way to give the guy a little extra money in his pocket now as opposed to after the season. Also give him a little insurance that if he gets hurt he isn't totally screwed. This isn't some deal that keeps Flournoy in Dallas longer than he was already going to be in Dallas.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the logic is that he could be our starter by like 2028 if Ferguson kind of stagnated.

Even if not, 6/year makes him like the 30th highest paid TE, and by this time next year it'll probably be like 33rd.

If they cry poor about not being able to keep Pickens then I'll complain, but a deal like this doesn't make or break anything.

Yeah I mean 6 mil a year right now in the NFL is basically top backup money. TJ Bass type money. I guess if you don't think the guy has earned the idea that he is a top backup yet 6 mil would feel premature. I won't call it a gamble necessarily but I think Dallas is obviously banking on Spann-Ford to play a significant role on offense as the number 2 TE. I think he is a good player. And while not a weapon they can at least depend on him to give a solid TE performance if Ferg gets hurt.

None of which prevents you from drafting a dynamic receiving TE if it comes up in the future.

He was an undrafted free agent and he's not a starter and he might never be a starter. It doesn't feel like a smart use of resources.

We have only paid like 1 outside free agent as much as this in like a decade.

Yeah kind of reminds me of like the Turpin signing or the Luepke signing. Like I like those guys and don't mind them being around. But they also feel like sort of fungible parts that some dude on a rookie contract could do. And maybe that's just because Turpin didn't do much last year as a returner. But I certainly can see the point that if you stop pissing away a few mil here and a few mil there that you can put all that money together and get a legit starter.

Grok, does Spann-Ford have the potential to be the greatest TE in Cowboys history?

No.

Spann-Ford is a solid, blue-collar blocking tight end and special-teams contributor who has carved out a nice role as the TE2. Through two full seasons he has 18 catches, under 200 yards, and one touchdown. That’s a fine career path for an undrafted free agent. It is not the résumé of someone with a realistic shot at “greatest Cowboys TE ever.”

Jason Witten sits at the top of that list with over a thousand receptions, double-digit seasons of production, multiple Pro Bowls, and a decade-plus of being Dak’s (and Romo’s) safety blanket. Jay Novacek, Billy Joe DuPree, and even the better years of recent guys are still several stratospheres above “reliable in-line blocker who sometimes gets targeted.”

Calling Spann-Ford a future franchise all-timer is like saying the reliable third-string offensive lineman who just got a modest extension is locked in for the Hall of Fame. Appreciate the hustle and the new contract. Just don’t start carving the bust yet.

Thank God we spent that early 4th on Shelton and not a RB thanks to John Park's wide world of football analytics.
I'm still mad about last year's draft, when our genius philosophy of "It's a strong draft in this position so we can wait forever to take a guy" left us with absolutely nothing.

But yeah... this year could've been Mike Washington.
