LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- The Chicago Bears have agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent center Brian de la Puente.

De la Puente played for New Orleans for the past three seasons, starting 44 of 48 games. He also made four postseason starts with the Saints.

The 6-foot-3, 306-pound de la Puente played his college ball at California.

The Bears announced the deal on Sunday.

Would have loved this signing last year before we got Frederick. What happened to him that he garnered so little interest?

Feh. What the hell would Jason Avant do in Dallas? Nothing. We got like Cole Beasley and stuff.

I would have liked to get him. One more weapon. We have the cap space to get him, but we are happy with where we are and stuff.

Avant is a safe secure player. Not what I would consider a weapon.

Now Cole Beasley? Better watch out NFL.
 
I'm all for adding weapons and I've gone to bat for selecting a WR in the first even with our "starters" entrenched. I wouldn't bat an eye at taking Sammy Watkins or Mike Evans if we took them in the first this year, and I think if we can land a top 60 WR who slid to the third or fourth this year, that'd be very wise.

That being said, I see not much that Avant can give us. He's a decent possession WR. We have enough guys already who are quite capable of catching balls from an accurate QB; Harris and Beasley are not complete scrubs.

I don't see the point in adding a guy who is older and only brings what Avant brings.
