Eatman: Despite Losing Ware and Hatcher, Jones Certain D-Line Improves

We should sign Pat Sims, he's still available and is good against the run, would be a very solid insurance policy at the 1 technique if we can't get one high in the draft. I'd certainly rather have him than some dipshit like McClain.

He's a JAG. Not especially explosive off the ball, gets cut pretty easy, looks like he benefitted from a good cast, takes plays off and oh yeah, stupid name.

All in all, he's not the guy I take to be my stud DE, especially a right end. He looks like a better interior guy than edge rusher.

I think Dee Ford is a retard, but I would take him well before this guy.
 
I don't think Ealy is a guy you want as your most explosive pass-rusher, seems like he'd play a similar role to Crawford, strongside DE in base, interior rusher in nickel/dime.

Then take him in the third round like Tyrone Crawford.

There are actually dumbasses who are buying the Aldon Smith "comparisons" and think he is worth a top 10-15 choice. No effing way.

You know damn good and well he's a better prospect than Crawford, he isn't Aldon Smith and he isn't worth a top 10-15 pick but he is definitely a first rounder.

I wouldn't even say he is a dead on first rounder in this draft. I would put him in the bottom half of the round, if not top of the second round and even that is a bit generous.

I put him behind Ford and Crichton as far as DEs go. We need a pass rusher, period. Not a flopping around half-assing RDE who really is miscast.

I am sure he will get overdrafted. I just do not want to be the team to do it. He is exactly the kind of dork we would take though.

I've seen that video before as well and it concerned me that you don't really see Ealy getting a great jump off the ball and bending the corner against OT's. Instead it looks like he is moving all over the line and beating guys on the inside. Half of the other highlights are because he hung around the line of scrimmage and got his hands up at the same time. I don't know how accurate of a portrayal that highlight is but it certainly doesn't look like he fits our need at RE. Of course neither does Crichton in my opinion.

I think Dee Ford is the perfect fit for RE in this defense. We have solid run defenders to rotate him with. We need some explosive athletes going after the QB.

He's infinity times the player Crawford is. But I agree he might be a strong side end instead of your lightning-quick pass rusher.

Still, so what?

FWIW Booze's metrics from the other thread paint a nice picture of Ealy in their DE section and in fact say he did the most with the least help.

If a guy isn't a plus pass rusher at DE he's a two down player who needs to be supplemented with a specialist. That's not the kind of guy you spend premium assets on. Red Bryant was a 4th Round Pick, Chris Canty was a 4th round pick, Corey Wootton was a 4th round pick, Brian Robison was a 4th round pick. You want an average starter at DE, you can get that in the middle rounds.

No, I don't agree. There is a middle ground, the Anthony Spencer type who is clearly not a premium pass rusher minus that one season, but didn't come off the field on third downs either. Spencer is a strong side end who is good against the run and gives enough against the pass rush that he really should have been like a career 8 sack guy. Instead, he had his ups and downs, but that's the kind of player he was.

Take a look at the LDEs in this defensive scheme over the years and let me know why you think it would be a priority.

I'm not sure I called it a "priority" but as Phil just said, yeah, look at a guy like Tony Tolbert. That's worth a mid-late first.

I'm not saying Ealy is my #1 choice, but there are things I'd hate a hell of a lot more. Including another worthless CB.

If you can get the Charles Haley, or a stud OL, instead, fine, do that.

But if we can't, I'm happy with Tolbert.

So you're looking for a LE that can get you 6-7 sacks a year and be stout against the run with like 45 tackles or so...

If only we had a guy on the roster who could do that.

I agree, I wish we had someone on the roster as good as Tony Tolbert or healthy Anthony Spencer.

We don't, though.

All it takes is Overreaction-Jerry. 2012 was all about CBs. 2013 the OL. Now 2014 will be the DL. Never a consistent team-building approach, just an endless series of stabs at catching lightning in a bottle.

And just because Spencer didn't come off the field, doesn't mean he shouldn't have. He was NOT a career 8 sack guy. He was a career 5-6 sack guy and he was a waste of space as a pass rusher until 2012.

Ealy will be a fine player.

You can't use Ware as the standard of success. He's a once in a generation type. I'd be very happy getting a Patrick Kerney or Will Smith.
