Defensive Coordinator Candidates

That's going to be the really difficult part. It's not just selling these guys on the team. But to an assistant coach who doesn't make life changing money, the contract is going to have to be right there with any other offer. You're not going to get the "buddy buddy giving you a chance" discount.

I'm still a bit thrown off by the supposed contract for Eberflus though. Was he really one of the highest paid DC's in the NFL? Or were they counting Bears money he was being paid. If we really did spend top DC money on him, we sure as shit should be willing to do it to fix the defense the Jones's buddy F'd up.
I think it was the latter. The Bears were still paying him a bit I believe.

I mean it would be way more consistent with the Jerry doesn't like to spend shit on his coaches. Especially assistant coaches.

But we also did give Dan Quinn a great contract at one point. So it's not totally impossible for Jerry to spend there. And honestly the way things are, the best thing Jerry could do is to break the bank for the best DC possible. It's the real number one need for this team in the offseason. And it has zero impact on the cap.

Here's a weird little possible dilemma: What if the DC wants more than Schotty is making? If it's true he's making about five mil or less that could be possible. Jerry might have to give BS a raise... or he might just hire whichever DC will take the least.

Just give Schotty a raise. You're talking about a couple million dollars. Meanwhile non NFL starters dwarf the money we are talking about.

That's what maybe should happen, even has to happen, but you know how much Jerry hates paying coaches.

Yeah I mean you can't pay a coordinator more than your head coach. And you can't force yourself to dumpster dive for coordinators because you have your head coach on the cheap. You need a normal power dynamic and money is power. Hell it's the only reason Jerry has any power.

But then again, nothing about Jerry is normal.

This is such a dumb narrative. He paid Eberflus one of the top DC salaries in the league.

Yes but will he continue now that he failed. Prior to this he didn't pay them so I think its still OK to question it.

True and I do wonder if part of the reason they're looking at younger inexperienced guys is to avoid paying a top end salary.

They might be cheaping out by avoiding guys like Flores but I doubt guys like Leonhard would be out of their price range.

Kind of strange how all these teams are interviewing the same 5ish guys in terms of Jones, Gannon, Parker, Leonhard, etc.

I'd rather take a shot with Jones over Gannon. While Gannon had very good defenses in Philly I don't like his tendencies. He's Eberflus part 2. Conservative, bend don't break, not aggressive. That works when you have good talent like he did in Philly.

I want a guy where the offenses reacts to what we're doing on defense, not the other way around. I think Leonhard and Jones could/would be that.

I think his year at LSU is tarnishing his outlook. Orgeron was on his way out. They didnt have the normal LSU talent on defense. I mean Damone Clark was potentially his best player. He was trying to teach NFLschemes to college kids which probably would've led to an improvement in the next year. I just don't want Gannon.
