He's a Jim Johnson disciple.
That is part of my issue with him. Johnson perfected that scheme years ago and McDermott has not tweaked it a lot over time.
Back then. spread concepts, quicker releases, mobile QBs, and RPO/heavy play-action were a rarity. The boom or bust zone blitzing gives up chunk plays if not successful and the run defense has been horrid. Part of that is built into the design.
