Defensive Coordinator Candidates

If Flores doesn't get a HC job I think there's a very real chance he ends up here. The fact that he's going to be out of contract without an extension with Minnesota is telling, there's no reason they couldn't do an extension which would be moot if he ends up with a HC job.

Yeah I just wonder if Flores is going to wait for the head coaching searches to settle before taking a DC job. I'm sure behind the scenes he will know if he is really in contention for any job. But we will probably have to wait a couple weeks for that.

He played in the NFL for like 10+ years.

Yeah undersized safety throwing his body around like he is twice his size. It's hard on the body.

How can you not like this dude? Not highly recruited out of high school, walked on at Wisconsin and was a damn good college football player. Goes undrafted and ends up playing 10 years or so in the NFL. College coach, stud defensive coordinator in college, stays involved as an analyst at Illinois after having surgery then moves on to the NFL. There's a natural progression and path to him ultimately becoming an NFL head coach someday. Hopefully, that progression includes the DC with the Cowboys

It may have been mentioned, but there's several refreshing aspects to the process and the candidates we've requested. We didn't wait a ridiculous amount of time to fire Eberflus.

And then none of the candidates have direct connection to Jerry, and they are at least from the coaching trees of the people we should be talking to. In the past, Simp would mention a list of names and we wouldn't talk to any of them, at least not seriously.

This time we are talking to (or at least requested) several of the top names on his list. Maybe we will finally get something right.

We do have recent precedent of doing this right with Quinn and the quick turnaround he orchestrated.

But that's why it was important to really suck where Jerry almost had no choice. If we been just bad, Jerry could have talked himself into another try with better personnel, luck, etc. Fortunately, Eberflus was up to the task of all-time awful.

It's true, had we had say the 20-25th best defense and say lost in the first round of the playoffs. We would have had Eberflus back. It would have been a lot of, give him a second year implementing his scheme, let us get the pieces in place, the poor guy lost Parsons right before the season. So in a way the epically bad defense was a good thing. Eberflus was never going to be a good defensive coordinator.

The argument that had the defense performed better it would have been bad because then the DC might not have been fired is a bad argument.

There's always going to be a cutoff point between good enough and not good enough.

The problem was never that Eberflus needed to go at all costs, it's just that he is incapable of making this defense good enough, which he proved in the end.

Had he improved the defense to the point that they would have been good enough (which would likely have been the case if we made the playoffs) then perhaps he wouldn't have deserved to be fired.

That's exactly how we got a decade of Jason Garrett, though. If he'd gone 6-10 in 2014 we could have been rid of that daywalking bastard five years earlier than we were.

Nah, we all could tell even at 8-8 that he wasn't good enough.

The front office being too blind and retarded to recognize when something isn't working is a different problem to me.

I'm not going to wish a good, contending playoff team in 2014 (which we were that year) is instead a bottom feeder just because the front office is too stupid to recognize that they need to change things.

Because at some point that logic leads to just hoping we go 0-16 every year. There's always going to be something every year that they're too stupid to recognize and address. Why even be a fan at that point?

In the end I'm happy Eberflus is gone, it's best for the team. But I'd trade it for a playoff appearance every time.

That's the point, though. We all know when the coach isn't good enough, yes, but what we know doesn't matter. It only matters what Jerry thinks. And he's such a stubborn moron, he needs to be hit between the eyes with a 2x4 to see it.

If they don't go with an established DC like Flores I think the plan might be to double up on guys with a DB background, similar to how they doubled up on OL coaches last offseason because they felt that was such a weakness.

Jerry has compared the 2025 secondary to the 2024 OL multiple times already, so my guess is that Jones and the Banda guy are really candidates for trumped up secondary coach spots, under Leonhard (who has a secondary-heavy background) or an established DC.

Yeah even if we had made the playoffs I would have said Eberflus isn't good enough. But Jerry wouldn't have said that.
