Cowboys keep third QB, intrigued by Vaughan’s upside

IRVING — The Dallas Cowboys haven’t kept a third quarterback the past two seasons. Dustin Vaughan convinced them to change that philosophy by showing off his big arm and upside in the preseason.
Vaughan, an undrafted free agent out of West Texas A&M, is on the 53-man roster as the Cowboys feared losing him to another team if they put him on waivers.
“I’m honored and blessed to have this opportunity to play for the Dallas Cowboys and hopefully it continues,” Vaughan said. “Hopefully I have a long future with these guys.”
Asked if he felt like a long shot, Vaughan smiled and said: “No. I thought I could handle it and I thought I could make it. That’s the attitude you need to have and you need to have that kind of confidence.”
Vaughan, however, knows he’s viewed as a developmental quarterback and understands that he has to continue to grow. He’s expected to get plenty of reps during practices, especially with starter Tony Romo being limited some with his surgically-repaired back.
Vaughan got the second-most snaps in the preseason behind backup Brandon Weeden, completing 22-of-43 passes for 212 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
“We feel Dustin has a lot of potential,” coach Jason Garrett. “We feel like he has a lot of really good traits. He’s a smart guy. He’s instinctive. He’s big, he can throw it. He just needs to play.
“We thought coming from a smaller school environment we thought he made a really good transition and did a pretty good job in the preseason opportunities he got. It certainly wasn’t perfect by any means but we feel like he has a lot of the traits we want to develop in a young quarterback.”
