Dak Watch Thread...



watching this hurts; it seems like it's been 30 years since we did anything like this.
 
It is actually absurd that Dak would think he can deal the cards in this standoff to Jones. He doesn’t have anything to leverage with except that he might turn out to be a championship caliber QB at some point but he is acting like he already has accomplished top tier status. His agent thinks Jones will roll over again and he might but it will be his own weakness if he does. I think at this point Jones has already laid out what his game plan is and it looks like he is lining up his ducks to force Dak to play the season an earn a top QB status or pack it in.

It's hard to have too firm of an opinion on the situation because we have no idea what's going on in negotiations but if they're offering him 35 AAV in pretty much any form or fashion he's an idiot for turning it down.

If it is as cut and dried as this, I can say I like him a whole lot less now.
 
Philly and LA must have buyers remorse re: Wentz and Goff. Hell, Philly drafted another top prospect to play QB.

Wentz and Goff truly settled down and it’s clear neither are elite level guys who can carry a team on their backs. Jimmy G. Is comically average.

“Market Value” is such a crock. Dallas is about to fork over a Brinks truck to Dak who’s about the same level guy as those first two when real stars like Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson set the market.

The others are just riding their coattails. Brady is such a chump for letting New England off the hook for so many years. It’s not like they used the extra money on anyone special.

If this is truly the case then I side with the team.

If there were no salary cap that'd be one thing but the team obviously has to work within certain boundaries in order to field a talented team while Dak is going to have generational wealth one way or the other, whether it's 4 years or 5, and he gets the fringe benefit of significantly higher endorsements as the Cowboys QB, as opposed to the QB of the Bills, Broncos, Falcons, Lions or who the fuck ever.

Given the commitment the team has shown to consistently surround him with talent (continuous investments along the OL, at WR, paying Elliott, so on and so forth) you'd think this guy could deal with one measly extra year on his deal.

Oh no Dak, you're only going to be a free agent when you're 30 instead of 29? Are you sure you'll be able to handle that?

What a fucking travesty.
 
Dak is clearly being a dick. Just sign for the 5th year. With one contract you can feed your family if you’re smart with your money.

Judging by that party he threw a few weeks ago, he’ll be fine. What was that? A Boston Market spread?

Only I genuinely dislike him as a QB. Great leader, great guy. Not a good QB.
 
Shoulda got Kirk Cousins when we had the chance. Same tier QB, less drama

If shoe were on other foot, would you trade multiple 1sts and et al for Tier 2 Dak, knowing that it’d be immediately accompanying a Tier 1 contract?

We signed Andy Dalton, and likewise, another team is reasonable to sign Cam Newton for 1/2 years while they figure it out long-term.

I think already too late this offseason to do that kind of trade. The Philip Rivers and Bridgewaters have already been signed.
 
No, I’m guessing that waiting for Mahomes contract is another factor.

Once Mahomes sets record, Prescott will probably be more willing to sign 5yr contract, but now higher than $35M
 
I’d respect the “Dak is a top 10 QB” argument more if it wasn’t the same thing I heard last off-season.

I’d agree at this point he’s probably transcended to that range. But prior to this year he was closer to a middle of the pack QB.

For all this talk about Lamar needing to sustain, so does Prescott. Dak is also overflowing with receiving talent at this point, so he needs to put up near MVP numbers to justify a big contract.

He should really take a smaller deal to help keep the pieces in place around him.

I think he has done enough to earn the contract. But it looks like both he and his representation are about setting the market.

I agree with your conclusion; with the addendum, if he’s not gonna be elite, and you are possibly looking at parting in two seasons, what could you get for him right now in trade? Need to think about it.

One choice. Depends on the circumstances. If, for example, you could have gotten the Dolphins 5th pick and next years first for Dak, and could have taken Tua, and still have Dalton.... that’s an appealing option.

No damn way am I rolling the dice with an unknown in place of a proven good starting QB. The QB transition from college to the NFL is probably the hardest to make. I'll stick with Dak, thanks.
 
I actually feel relatively comfortable projecting QBs in the high first. It’s when you start getting later in the first that it gets dicey. And if it doesn’t work then you have that top pick and your own next year too to try again.
