Weird how he couldn’t keep focused for one reason or another until the middle of his career. He was suspended for drugs which might explain some of it. He was just getting going in New Orleans and then they traded him to the Chargers. He made a splash in San Diego and then followed it with one truly great year— and then he went back to being the same inconsistent guy.

He had that weird way of holding the football out palmed in one hand, used to drive Howard Cosell nuts.
 
The thing I remember most about Raff was that he kept using the same white jersey even after they changed the design in 1982 and then again in 1986.

He was fine in that we still won the Super Bowl, but the edge of dominance Donaldson helped provide up front clearing the way for Emmitt time and again and creating extra space for Troy— disappeared.

It most evident in key division games down the stretch and of course also in the KC game itself.

Watch how even in these few highlights 53 takes his man out of the picture or doubles a guy and erases him.

Emmitt’s run average dropped correspondingly. Go ahead, look it up. But it stood out most awfully on 4th and a foot from our own 29 vs Philadelphia two games later.

He was a beast for the short time we had him. Pretty sure he ended his career here.

Everything you say is true, however Big E's drop in his level of play after his car accident the year prior I think were an even bigger factor than the loss of Donaldson.

No doubt, but even 85% of Big E was still above average. That week one obliteration of the Giants on MNF— the line had rarely blocked better. Donaldsons experience, technique and power right up the middle elevated him to the leader of the OL from the outset. Just watch what he does to the Giant DL interior on Emmitt’s opening 60 yard TD carry.
 
I remember being a Ron Francis fan.

Unfortunately he sucked. :(
