Cowboys Nostalgia Thread

I don't think he did though. I think according to Aikman the Chargers wanted him but he ultimately decided to retire.

I also remember Troy saying Andy Reid reached out to him as well and that there were talks of him joining the Eagles.

Can you imagine?

Well I was wrong, but according to Aikman it wasn't Norv's decision.

Before I got released from the Cowboys, but after I knew I was going to be released, I went out to San Diego to see Norv. I wound up going to Dean Spanos’ house, visited with him, saw the team’s president of football. I had dinner with Norv, and I remember sitting with Norv at the restaurant saying, “Gosh, I just wish I knew what the future held. These last few years in Dallas have been really hard, and I just don’t want to be put in another situation where we’re just not competitive. I just wish I had a crystal ball.”

Norv gave me one of those great talks, and he said, “The greatness of this is we don’t know, and as competitors, you don’t want to know. You want to lay it all on the line, take the risks, and see what can happen.”

I said, “You know, you’re right. I want to come here and play.” I was excited about it.

I had met everyone in the building except John Butler, the general manager who had come from Buffalo. Norv thought I was going to be offered a contract, but Butler had other plans. He was looking at Doug Flutie or Rob Johnson, whichever one Buffalo was going to cut. Buffalo wound up keeping Johnson.

Flutie gets released, and the next morning I get a call from Norv. I was in Santa Barbara and he says, “You’re not going to believe this, but we just signed Doug Flutie.” And I said, “Well, OK, that makes the decision easy for me. I’ll retire.” So I did.

That is insane. It just goes to show you what happens when a team has a moron GM.

Yep. He mentions it in the article I posted. Miami too, when Norv was there. Aikman to the eagles would've been rough though.

The SB XXX game is on the Roku and I forgot what a terrible call there was in the fourth when we were up 20-7 and Scott Case knocked the ball loose from the WR... clearly an incomplete pass, but because the Steelers recovered, they called it a fumble and the drive continued. :mad

Also, my God, sometimes I forget what a beating Paul Maguire was. :doh I didn't watch much NBC/AFC in those days. I'd love to see how Twitter would treat him today. :lol

They would hopefully savage his stupid ass. God, he was the worst.

That announcing team was all horrendous. I think Trumpy in the previous years was even worse.

How the hell did we go to 3 super bowls in 4 years and not once get Madden? I feel like we were robbed.

Crazy right?

NBC got the rights for 3 Super Bowls between 90-96 -- and it just so happened to be the 3 SBs we played in. :doh

I couldn't stand that goof.

As insufferable as he was at NBC, he was even more intolerable when he joined the awful Sunday night crew with Joe Theisman already on it.
Damn. I forgot about that. We were subjected to extreme trauma with the announcers over the years.

That's ESPN late 90s/early 2000s crew might be the worst football commentating team I've ever heard.
