I think Meredith was a pretty solid QB and was the beginning of making the Cowboys a competitive team. I also saw him quite a bit when he was a QB at TCU. I was in the military at that time in Texas. I guess one of my real Gee Whiz times was after I got out of the military and was working for a Financial Services Company that I had the opportunity to spend the day with him because he was promoting some equipment for his brothers company and we were buying some of the equipment to promote our financial capabilities in that market. I was supposed to babysit him and shield him from overeager fans and droves of sports writers. We hung out in an out of the way office and just shot the breeze for most is the day. He was a pretty neat guy and zero pretense. I still have some of his memorabilia some where but I dont exactly where it is. I think he is principally responsible for lending credibility to the Dallas organization.

Meredith had charm, too, and that always helps. So did having Bob Hayes to throw to, but yeah Dandy Don was a solid leader and playmaker for sure.

I have seem every Dallas QB since Eddie LeBaron to current. I think maybe some are going on what they have read or has been published by others that is a source of influence for their opinions. Seeing players play year in and year out is a different perspective than reading or watching highlights. A lot of variables such as team mate alignments lend a lot of credibility to their performance especially in the early years. Some of the most highly regarded are the ones who had a lot of talent around them but they were not as athletic as others. Anyhow the debates are interesting to read and wonder how much of the total opinions are first hand.

I haven’t seen it all but I have seen all the Quarterbacks that have played for the Cowboys and my picks aren’t in keeping with most. Let’s just let sleeping dogs lie and and I will say my favorite as a pure position player nothwithstanding Super Bowls etc. is Tony Romo. As player for the Cowboys he had put up more stats than anyone else. He is a hard luck guy with injuries but one of the most competitive players that has held that position. And just to keep it in context of the position he could do some silly things at times but the effort was never in question. He is my choice as for the best at that position. I will close the door now.
