Jared Allen mulling options after Dallas Cowboys visit

Jared Allen plans to end his visit with the Dallas Cowboys without signing a contract.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Allen will head home to weigh all his options after meeting with the Cowboys on Monday night and Tuesday, according to a source familiar with the situation.

There is no expectation that the 31-year-old defensive end will make a decision on his future today. He wants to discuss his options with his wife first. By all accounts, his Cowboys visit went well, according to Rapoport.

Allen's current options are to join the Cowboys or Seattle Seahawks -- whom he visited last week -- make additional visits or take his ball and walk away.

The 11-year veteran has heard from five teams but has made just the two visits. He currently has no additional visits lined up.

Allen is Around The League's No. 4 overall remaining free agent and the top defensive end on our board.

Allen has averaged 14.5 sacks over the past seven seasons and proved last year he has a lot of football left in the tank if he wants to continue playing.

Rapoport reported Monday night that Allen's agent had discussed a contract with the Denver Broncos around the range of the three-year, $30 million deal the team eventually gave DeMarcus Ware. However, no official offer from the Broncos was ever extended.

Time will tell if Allen finds a contract in the range he deems worth his age and talent level.

He should take whatever the Seahawks are offering and try to win a championship.

But it looks like money is all important to this guy.

Or he does not want to play for a loser trainee head coach, an overrated one hipped DC and have zero chance at a Super Bowl before his career ends.

The Dallas Cowboys invite two high profile free agents to town, wine and dine them, then allow them to leave without getting their signatures on contracts.

This is a new way of doing business at Valley Ranch.

Henry Melton and Jared Allen have come and gone. The club has a strong interest _ and an even stronger need _ in adding these quality defensive linemen to the roster. Yet Melton left for a visit with the St. Louis Rams while Allen returned home to discuss his future with his family.

Is this a bad thing? No. Why should the Cowboys make an offer Melton can’t refuse when he’s coming off surgery for a torn ACL? Why should the club throw money at an older defensive end (Allen is about to turn 32) in a young man’s game?

A popular theory floating around is that the Cowboys don’t have the money to sign both players. That’s not true. The team has a little over $7 million in cap room and could structure both deals in a way to make Melton and Allen fit. If they needed slightly more room and didn’t want to push too much money down the road, the club could restructure the contracts of a current player or two.

What the Cowboys aren’t willing to do _ at least not at the moment _ is pay above market value to secure a deal. They are willing to make their pitch and know they are competitive with what other teams in the league are willing to offer.

Will the Cowboys maintain this stance? It depends on how this plays out. The team has so little talent in the defensive line it must come away with at least one of these players. If one signs elsewhere, the desperation of potentially coming away with nothing could drive the price up.

But for now, the club is conducting its business in a prudent manner.

That’s not a bad thing.

Not saying we have a smart GM, but the Cowboys did give Melton a smart contract like that. Basically one year try before you buy.

Maybe it was because Jerry was overseas and this deal was done by Marinelli, Garrett and Jones (Stephen).....

I'm choosing to believe this deal was proposed by Melton's camp so he isn't locked in to a multiyear low pay deal. Our brass isn't smart enough to come up with this.

It was. It was reported at the time of the signing that the idea of the contract structure came from Melton's agent.

I'm surprised no other NFL teams jumped all over that contract. Hell if you have the cap room that's not bad money to pay for a rotational DT. There is zero risk in that contract.
 
He probably wanted to be here to an extent since he's from Dallas. Another team would have had to pay more to sway him.

People like to make fun and call people homers for comments like that but you are probably right. I'd say the combination of playing for a coach he loves and playing close to home were pretty big draws for him.
