The market would accurately value the labor. Moreover, you’d be able to give raises to the people doing better work.

Yep. And, that was all by design, of course. They needed stupid people to follow along with stupid policies. So, they put that plan into action in 1979. And, unfortunately, it has worked flawlessly.
