Newman and Jenkins were both pro bowl level talents (admittedly Newman had underperformed for most of his career) that were wildly inconsistent under Campo. If they were consistently mediocre it's be one thing, but they were everywhere from amazing to not worthy to wear an NFL uniform. That points to bad coaching. Lets not pretend Sanders technique was not perfect, he was an athletic marvel but a little undisciplined, He couldn't tackle worth a shit either.

Okay then continue with the mentality that everything is stupendious or bust . Also known as sensational or suck with no objective middle ground. There doesn't seem to be any other approach for some. To me however, everything isnt that cut and dried.

Sure, but if he can average 4.2 behind the Titans line, what would he average here? You're not signing him to be a 1200 yard back. You're signing him as part of a committee. If you can get a 100 carries and 420-450 yards I'd say you're pretty happy. If your target is for an elite starter, well you'll never find a target. But can he be a change of pace to Williams/Randle I think absolutely.

Is everyone giving up on the current group of RBs before the season starts? I think Dallas may need help at that position but i also think there may be a couple of productive backs in the group now.

Nope, just think we could use a RB that is more of a power runner to mix with the guys we currently have.

It's really hard to believe in them, LT.

You'd like Joseph Randle to be your backup, part 2 of a 1-2 punch, but he looks to be most qualified to actually lead this group by default given his relative health. We know nothing about him playing extended carries and pass protection all year long.

Darren McFadden has failed to perform too many times in 8 seasons for him not to take the lion's share of blame for those failures. He is already injured as many predicted.

Ryan Williams' history of frequent injuries dates back to college and has continued big time in the NFL. It would be a miracle to get extended meaningful snaps from this guy at all let alone heading into January.

Lance Dunbar is a specialist back who you want to use sparingly based on his size and (sheesh) his own injury history.

Basically this is a squad most of whom never met an injury they didn't like.

Lastly, it's not like this board is driving the search for castoffs like Green. This is the team's doing, which is the simplest validation of everyone's concerns.

Take a bit to look at our defensive back play during Campo's tenure. Would it be unfair to say that we hit all time lows for the franchise? Because the stats back that up. Look at our 2010 defense. Look at 2010, the same players behind a damn decent 2009 defense got blown up by everyone. 2011 was really no better, Newman looked like he got on the field as part of make a wish foundation. Frankly the body of work the defensive backs put up during Campos tenure from 2008-2011 shows empirically that he was a bad coach.
In this case I feel like the uncertainties you're throwing out are just trying to introduce variables to muddy the waters. Other than putting forward that the most talented athlete ever played well while presumably ignoring Campo and doing what he wanted.(i.e. business decisions) there's no evidence that says Campo wasn't a crappy coach. Especially when he returned.
In 2010 Campo had Newman, Jenkins, and Scandrick. They all had the potential to play well, they allowed bad teams to torch them to the tune of the worst defensive performance of that franchise in 35 years. There isn't much middle ground there. That's definite provable incompetence, and in this case seeking a "middle ground" that conflicts with all of the evidence presented is the unreasonable perspective.

I agree with this. Obviously we're rolling the dice, and could probably use another guy, but we're no worse off than when we were throwing together a lineup of old jets and UDFAs during Parcells' first few years.

Except it doesn't work like that. Different circumstances, a year older, and especially if he's mostly going to be used to get the dirty yards.

My target is as good as we can get. That's not Green. I'd rather take a stab at Chris Johnson, at least he has a chance at being above average.

I'd rather go with what they have. Wait and see who maybe gets cut in camp, or maybe a trade scenario opens up.

I want no part of a guy who probably won't be better than what we have.

McFadden is already injured and TC hasn't even started. Do we really expect McFadden, Williams, and Dunbar to all remain healthy in a run-first offense on a team that expects to be playing meaningful games in January? Seems unlikely.

McFadden is not injured currently.

The difference is Chris Johnson is repetitive. He doesn't really bring anything new to our RB group. What we lack on the roster is a a workhorse style back that can pound out the tough yards. I guess you could argue that Chris Johnson is better then any RB we have on the roster but if it's the Chris Johnson the Titans had in 2013 I would disagree.

If you're really going with a RB by committee approach then I like the idea of bringing in a powerful RB to mix with Randle.
