But it is a penalty. Now if he had the ball he could be tackled by his hair and it wouldn't be a penalty, but without the ball it's the same as defensive holding.

I wonder if the refs are discouraged from penalizing hair pulling? Its always been clear that the NFL didn't like dreads coming out of the helmet. Or at least it seemed that way to me.

From a competitive standpoint I'd probably prefer my players not have long hair either to prevent situations like this. Similar to defensive players preferring really tight clothing so as to be less likely to be held.

I agree, why give someone something to grab? Never made since to me. And I'm sure having a dread lock pulled out of the top of your head hurts like hell.

I can't remember who it was, but that happened a couple years ago. They replayed it over and over, after a guy pulled out about 3-4 strands of dreads. I think it was a punt gunner that the blocker had pulled down. That shit had to hurt.

That was Andre Ellington, Jason Babin ripped it out and was holding it up on the sideline like a scalp

Marshawn Lynch got some of his hair pulled out last month.
