Archer: Looking back so Cowboys don't make same 2010 mistake

We don't necessarily need to sign a guy like Suh to a mega contract. If we came away from free agency with something like Tillman at CB, Paea at DT and Sheard at DE I would be very happy, assuming we brought back a few of our own like McClain and Moore.

Of course I wouldn't complain about signing Suh either.

I don't see the allure of Paea he has been pretty average overall and I think a rotation of McClain, Brent and the FA from last year would do just as fine.

Not saying Paea is a scrub but I don't see him being a big upgrade but I admit I have paid much attention but he never jumped out at me.

I am not saying the 1 could not be upgraded I just would want a true upgrade.

No single defensive player short of Watt can possibly be worth all that money.

If we give Spencer 1 million a year or something to come back as a rotational guy I won't be upset. I'd love a guy like Sheard but he should be able to get at least 3 a year, of course he'd be an upgrade and I'd much rather have him but I understand if the team wants to use that money elsewhere. Adrian Clayborn is a guy I'd look at, very injury prone but also productive when on the field, if he's willing to take a prove it deal I'd be happy to bring him on.

I'm really interested to see what a guy like Pernell McPhee gets on the open market, if his price is reasonable I'd take a long look at him, he provides position flexibility and pass rush from the interior.

Screw that. I'd bet a lot of money there's no way Spencer plays 16 games. If we can't get Sheard, get Brandon Graham. He's basically a younger, healthy Spencer.

If we end up with Crawford, McClain, Brent, and Coleman...then we failed.

Brandon Graham is mediocre as hell. Might as well stick with what we have. Graham is not an upgrade.

Graham is a guy who looked like he had a lot of talent going into the draft. His career so far in the NFL has been pretty mediocre but he hasn't had a ton of opportunities. He is the type of guy who you hope Marinelli could turn the switch on for.

A lot of guys in the draft look like they have a lot of talent bit don't. He's one of those guys.

He has 17.5 sacks in 4 seasons worth of games. Marinelli would get out him what he's gotten out of guys like we already have. At best.

He's had plenty of time and plenty of opportunities. Hell the Eagles had to go out and throw money at Connor Barwin because of Graham being a bust. Barwin has flourished in their system. Graham is still a bust.

He is who he is. He'd be a big waste of time and resources.

Just no.

He's an upgrade because he's young and he's healthy. Also, Spencer has 16.5 sacks in the last 4 years, including 0.5 in the last 2. You're bitching because Graham's not a pro bowler. Well, no shit. We're looking at not paying for a pro bowler. We're talking about the Mackenzie Bernadeau/Kyle Kosier of DL signings. You hope for the latter, you live with the former as a depth guy if he's cheap.

No I'm not bitching because he's not a pro bowler. I'm bitching because he's simply not good. When a guy isn't better than Selvie or Mincy, why the eff would we sign him? We already have our Bernadeau.

It would be retarded to sign Graham. I suspect you haven't actually seen him play a whole lot. He simply is not good. If we aren't bringing in an upgrade why do it?

If you want to replace Spencer with a younger guy, that's fine. It makes far more sense to draft a guy who has actual upside than to bring in Graham and his 4 sacks a year.

As an aside, Graham isn't an effort guy so I doubt Marinelli would even want him anyway.

I'd say he's on about the same level as Selvie and Mincey, just not a good fit at OLB in a 3-4. Selvie had 3 career sacks when he got here and he's averaged 5 while in Dallas. That's not a high goal to shoot for.

I want a guy who has 10 sacks a year too, but that guy is Jerry Hughes and he's going to be a lot more expensive.

That is 4 DTs...how many do you think we'll carry?

What are you talking about?

I said I would rather role with Brent and McClain and Bishop than spending money on Paea, what does Crawford and Coleman have to do with that?

My entire point was that I don't see Paea as a huge upgrade at the 1.

He just hates Spencer so anybody will do.:lol

Are all 3 on the roster? If they are then there is not any room for an upgrade.

I was thinking going into camp having those guys battle for a spot and did you not notice I said "IF" we could not upgrade.

We have to upgrade across the DL...as far as I am concerned Crawford is the only player that should be assured a spot. They are not starter quality.

Good thing I never said anybody should be assured a spot.:lol
