Dwayne Harris stands out as blocker
September, 30, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Dwayne Harris caught just two passes for 18 yards in the Dallas Cowboys’ win against the New Orleans Saints.

That doesn’t seem to be much of a contribution, but Harris had a huge impact on the game. He was the seventh or eighth offensive lineman at times, joining the five big guys up front as well of the tight ends.

On nine running plays by DeMarco Murray or Joseph Randle, Harris served as an edge blocker and the Cowboys gained 68 yards.

On a 5-yard run by Murray in the first quarter, he pinned outside linebacker Junior Galette inside. On a 22-yard run by Murray, he shielded himself between the ball carrier and safety Kenny Vaccaro. On a 3-yard run he pinned Vaccaro and also helped get defensive end Cameron Jordan caught in the wash. On Murray’s 28-yard touchdown he took care of the backside cornerback.

“I love blocking for those guys,” Harris said. “They block for Tony [Romo] when it’s a pass play, so it evens everything out. We all do our job, do our part so somebody can eat.”

Jason Garrett simply called Harris a “football player,” which might sound strange considering, you know, he plays football.

“It shows up as a returner. Certainly it shows up as a cover guy in special teams and it shows up on offense,” Garrett said. “Whatever role we’ve given him, he seems to rise to it. Sometimes we hand him the ball. Sometimes we ask him to block and sometimes we throw it to him. He just seems to handle whatever we ask him to do. He’s got a very calm demeanor about him and he’s just a football player.”

I think I'm in the minority here, but I really love what Harris brings to this team. He should be taking the snaps from Street at WR.

I don't think you are in the minority at all...Harris is held in high regard here, particularly as a returner and ST coverage. If he makes a couple catches, that is gravy.

I doubt you're in the minority.

Harris is a baller no matter where he's playing. All four special team coverages and offense, the guy gives his all.

You timestamping sonofabitch.

We all love Harris, too. Except maybe LT..

Get you facts straight. All I ever said about Harris was that as a receiver I preferred someone else over him. I never questioned his utility contributions.

Harris is pretty much the perfect 3rd WR as long as Bryant and Williams stay healthy

Jerry certainly has certainly done a great job drafting at the WR and OL positions since Parcells split.

Fair enough, but you will never read a piece proclaiming either Cole Beasley's value as a 3rd receiver or as a blocker for the best rushing team in football.

I don't disagree with that. As I recall my contention was that as a receiver the individual I was comparing Harris to was bigger, stronger and could present a lot of mismatches that Harris couldn't because of his size. The other factors of Harris wasn't part of my comparison.

I don't know which of these guys you were comparing to, but I don't think it was Street:

L’Damian Washington WR 6'4 188 R Missouri

Chris Boyd WR 6'4 206 R Vanderbilt

Devin Street WR 6'3 190 R Pittsburgh

Tim Benford WR 5'11 193 1 Tennessee Tech

LaRon Byrd WR 6'4 220 3 Miami (Fla.)

Jamar Newsome WR 6'1 201 1 Central Florida
