Archer: Cowboys have to 'put socks back on' all over again

I'd say if Jerry wants him he has already been talking to him. I wouldn't even be surprised if numbers haven't already been discussed if Jerry wants him bad enough.

I don't necessarily want him but it wouldn't surprise me at all. AP is basically Jerry's buddy already. Seems to be a lot of mutual interest already.

Jones can't do much with Petersen because that would be tampering and there are a lot of folks who would like to catch him in something like that. The small conversation he had previously raised some eyebrows. Jones will be very careful jumping into anything prematurely. It's not even a sure thing that the requested disposition date of April 15 will happen.

I am curious as to what your plan is for the RB position...bring back Murray? Draft a RB? How would you handle it?

I havent been discussing plans. I have been pointing out some difficulties if Murray isn't resigned. I posted my plan several times about Murray. I would offer him a base of 4.5 million base with incenatives for 4 yers and if he refused then franchise him and see if he holds up. If he does then work on a longer term contract.

Franchising him would be a massive mistake...the tag number is 10.85 mil for RBs, which would kill any cap flexibility.

I think it is better than rolling the dice on the Petersen timetable and passing over the draft.

I disagree...having his cap hit at over 10 mil severely hampers chances to improve the team outside the draft and tightens things up with a Dez deal...and other players we'd like back.

The team needs more options than just bringing Murray back, be it drafting a back or going after one in FA. If the team limits itself only to Murray it is a huge mistake.

Yep. The draft has to factor in, because there's no way 2014 is going to repeat itself. Will Murray stay healthy? How much will 400 carries limit Murray's 2015? Will Joseph Randle improve enough to be a legit #2?

Getting a top flight RB in the draft is key to both short and longterm success.

The identity of this team demands the stable of backs be first class top to bottom.

It wouldnt be a cap hit of over 10M. because if you signed Murray at an acceptable level of say 5. M it would only be an increase of 5.M.

I agree with this. While Murray is a great back, he is not irreplaceable. He also isn't worth handcuffing the entire team either.

As I said it would only be a cap increase of about 5M to franchise Murray.

If you franchise him it would be over a 10 mil cap hit. It is a complete fantasy to think he would accept the type of deal you are proposing...4.5 mil with incentives? Yeah, right.

It is just as of a fantasy to think Peterson comes cheap after losing $4M of his money due to the suspension.

You really think he is in a position to demand big dollars?

If you go after Petersen you will pass on the draft for RBs.

Which would be a huge mistake.

Whoever Dallas finds in FA will be a downgrade from Murray (even Murray himself). The team could have used a dynamic #2 last year, and that still hasn't changed either. Barring incredible luck in free agency and/or Joseph Randle's development, the gap is going to have to come from the draft.

Denver's experience with all their RBs just proves you can't go wrong going for quality and depth at the position.

Bottom line is Dallas can't squander Romo's window by just hoping a niche FA or two and Joseph Randle's improvement will replace Murray's outstanding 2014 production and playmaking ability. This has to be a full court press.

They are going to have to pay an amount to someone even Petersen will not play for less than 5M. If you want to save money forget both and draft.

Regardless of what happens with Peterson, we need to go after a RB somewhere around the middle of the middle of the draft. Even if we get Peterson he's going to be on a 2-3 year contrast and then he will be gone. Either way, we need more talent backing him up and eventually supplanting him.
