Am I Being Realistic

The one caveat that I would make to the 5.3YPC argument would be in short yardage. Last year a consistent problem was on 2/3 and 1 the line could not impose its will on the defense and get that yard when the defense knew it was coming. So Garrett quit trying. The addition of Martin has resolved that.

Now I do think on the main argument that you are both right. It is a function of the line being continued to be built, but Linehan's commitment to the run where Garrett gave up on it is also a big part of it.

I don’t think we truly gave it a chance though...we'd go empty or SG in that situation more than line up and pound it.

Well, Linehan is running Garrett's offense, so.... your point doesn't really make any sense.

Yes, I definitely remember all the playaction and pick plays from Garretts offense.....oh wait

The one thing I will give Garrett credit for is he also realized he sucked and found someone who could cover his butt. Linehan has done that to this point so give the ginger man credit for that.

That's not how it happened though, he had to be forced out of playcalling and then snuck back in after handicapping Callahan by making him run his playbook.

It didn't work consistently in the first part of the year, and since it hadn't worked in 4 years prior, he did not know it could work at the time. It clearly took him time THROUGH the later parts of the year to catch on now.

Debate over.

And even when it was glaringly obvious it was working, he still abandoned it with 23 point fucking leads. You're right, debate over.

Correct.

You know it never will be. Didn't work consistently at the beginning of the season so when it is working he goes away from it? Is that what you are trying to tell us?

No, I'm saying the beginning of the season in 2013 it was inconsistent with a few weeks well under 4 ypc, so it's not like he ignored 5.3 ypc all year long. It wasn't really till around the bye week that it was clicking every week (and some of those later weeks I actually think we did run over 25 carries).

Given the fact that he ran the ball consistently back in 2007-08 when we had a decent OL and now are doing so again, the "Garrett refuses to run" thing is overblown, is all.

Actually, that would just make me right, since I agree Linehan is part of it.

I'm not the one pretending the OL has no effect on the playcalling.

I very clearly said there is no excuse for that, so great point.

It's still obvious that we are now LEANING on the run mostly because we have the line to do it now.

Actually there were only 3 games last year where he had 20 or more carries and 2 of those were within the first 4 games. Both of those times he averaged 4 ypc or more. 10 games last year were over 4 and quite a few way over 4.

That seems to have gotten lost in this deep discussion. Line talent, new scheme....this is equally at
play here in this new-found running success.

I'm not "giving him the credit" for anything, I'm saying exactly what everyone else was too upset to realize for years.... you can't run without an OL, now we have one, now we are running.

The argument that Garrett would never run it would make more sense if he didn't actually run it decently back in 2007 and 2008 before the line fell apart.

We ALSO know that Linehan doesn't run it when he doesn't have the personnel.

Add up the facts. Linehan doesn't run when he doesn't have the personnel.... Garrett did run in the past when he did have the personnel.... now they both have the personnel and we are running it.... OMG ITS ALL LINEHAN.

Foolishness.
Except Garrett had the personnel last year and critically DID NOT RUN IT.

I'll have to go back and look, but Sturm in one of his mid year articles gave some stats that showed that on 2nd and 1 or 2 the team was awful when running the ball. And that gave a pass inclined Garrett all the reason he needed to go S11 on 3rd and short.

We weren't all that good running early in the year. Once the OL started to click, Garrett had a weapon that he could have ridden all the way to the playoffs and didn't. He cost himself a contract extension by not recognizing what he had and if he wasn't sucking Jerry's cock so hard, it would have cost him his job.

I believe a few of the ones where we had less than 20 carries were early in the season and may have been reasoning in his mind to abandon.

Look, not saying it's right to abandon it, but it was clearly later in the year before it started being every week with over 4 ypc.

He ignored half a season of successful line blocking. Fault worthy? Yes. Proof that he won't run it with a competent OL? Absolutely not because it was disproved before and is being disproved again. Clearly meaning the personnel upgrade had convinced us to run again.

By the way, the line was still not really a huge strength last year. Smith is better now, Frederick better now, we added Martin who is an upgrade, and I think Leary is also playing better than he was last year.

Results are the same. He realzed his career needed help.

I agree. Remember, I'm not saying he's blameless. We all went into last year thinking the line was a weakness though and for the early part of the season it proved true yet again.

Being slow to adjust to the development and improvement of Smith, Frederick and Leary doesn't mean he "refuses" to run, it means he was (properly to blame for being) slow to recognize and adjust.

He says all the time he wants to run, he has run before, and he is at the very least allowing it to happen now (my guess is he has more input than some believe though).

He's not averse to running the ball and I bet he is loving this.

Has there ever been anybody this mediocre defended this much?

Ever?

:lol
