Todd Archer
Aug 17, 2026, 08:32 PM ET
The 2026 NFL training camps have kicked off around the league, and our team reporters are on the ground each day following all the action. Cowboys reporter Todd Archer has the latest intel on standouts, highlights, position battles, depth chart movement, cut decisions and, of course, the quarterbacks room.
What follows is everything we are seeing and hearing at the Cowboys' camp. Will Dallas turn around the NFL's worst defense from 2025? Who are the breakout players to watch, especially for fantasy football? And which players on the roster bubble could make the final 53?
Catch up on all the updates, including the Cowboys' top camp performer and biggest lingering question as preseason games begin.
Who is the Cowboys' top performer so far at camp?
George Pickens. He has essentially made a big play in every practice as he gets set to play on the $27.3 million franchise tag. Whatever disenchantment some might have expected from Pickens without a long-term deal has not materialized. Coaches have noted his attention in the meeting rooms since the start of training camp.
He and Dak Prescott have picked up where they left off in 2025 when the receiver had career highs in catches, yards and touchdowns. Does that mean he will surpass those figures again in 2026? Not necessarily, but his performance so far has shown a focused player as the season inches closer.
What still needs to be answered over the course of preseason games?
Because the Cowboys aren't going to play their starters in the preseason, it's impossible to completely answer anything about the defense. There have been encouraging signs there, but let's look to the offense for what can be answered in the preseason games: Who will back up Prescott?
Joe Milton III and Sam Howell have alternated as Prescott's backup in practice and both have had good moments and not-so-good ones. The Cowboys believe they have line play and skill players to give both QBs a fair shot to perform in the preseason and not have them running for their lives. Read more below:
