2026 Random Cowboys Stuff Thread...

Assuming we decide not to sign Pickens, what is the latest we could trade him? I don’t know how that works with the franchise tag.

Edited to add: I know when the trade deadline is, but after the season is over, how does the franchise tag work in relation to trades.

We'd have to tag him again and then trade him, before FA or the draft realistically, although I don't think there's an actual deadline that they'd have to trade him before.

Ah ok thank you, that makes sense.

Just saw that Josh Downs requested a trade, I wouldn't trade for him but he's a UFA after this season and I think he might be a decent mid-tier guy to go after if they let Pickens walk so that we aren't left with a bunch of slop behind Lamb.

Might even take a bit of a discount to play with his brother.

Of course that'd require our FO signing a mildly expensive FA, so...you know.
He’s a downgrade from Pickens but we would desperately need another WR and he’s got some untapped potential. “Brandin Cooks-like” but not washed up, potential.

And yeah he’s twice the WR that Fluornoy is.

I think I like Flournoy better than Downs.

And just an FYI, they basically have the same amount of yards this year. And Flournoy has way better competition for targets. But ultimately they would be like a 2a and a 2b as not ideal second receivers but probably great third receivers.

And then there is the Schmitty factor of homering. Not sure I could handle it.
Yeah, but you’re wrong yet again on a Carolina player.

The problem with Downs is that we simply do not employ WRs with his size profile.

I say again, CeeDee had his best year and the offense was incredible the year Brandin Cooks was the 2 and Tolbert or Gallup (can't remember) was the 3.

I think a guy like Downs or a young guy would be just fine. If only we hadn't given away or worsened (Broderick Jones) our draft picks. :(
Lamb had his best year but (1) did the offense have ITS best year? And (2) does that Lamb exist still? If so, for how much longer?

Feh on Flournoy being better.

The Colts offense has been a mess for a while now, particularly the passing game, so it's hard to attribute too much to his statistical production.

I'd be surprised if Flournoy ever put up something along the lines of what Downs did earlier in his career with a line of like 70/800/5.

I think they'd be a decent pairing behind an elite 1 like Lamb though that wouldn't break the bank. I assume Downs could be had for like 4/60.
Yeah and I think that (70/800/5) is low end for what Downs could do with a functional offense.

Not that our offense has been exactly functional recently.

Pretty close to its best year. And sure, why wouldn't that Lamb still exist? He was incredible just a couple of games ago.

If anything I'd be more worried about Dak falling off.

You make it so hard to like a UNC player. Downs is a good player. I even said I would sign him. But then you always have to pop off like he is the second coming.

Downs is a slot heavy player and undersized. He has basically the same yards as Flournoy right now on more targets. So yeah, I do think that Flournoy would play more because he is better on the outside. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't love an explosive route runner like Downs on offense.

"The Chiefs desperately need a receiver who can separate against man coverage. George Pickens would be the dream trade for the Chiefs, and they should be willing to trade significant capital for him if the Cowboys put him on the market, rather than potentially losing him in free agency next year, but Jerry Jones is unpredictable. The next best option would be Downs, who could be significantly more productive in the Chiefs’ offense."

This is the type of thing the Cowboys should do but never will. They will instead view this season as still alive for a Superbowl. And then when we don't make the playoffs we will have nothing to show.

Would 10000% trade Pickens to the Chiefs for a 1 if they have no intention of extending him.

No chance it happens unless we lose one, or maybe even both of the next two though.

Yeah and it honestly makes sense for the Chiefs. Great running game. Good defense. But really lacking at #1 WR. Pickens would thrive with Mahomes. It actually could be the difference of a Superbowl for them.

In Dallas. Unless Pickens is in the long term plans, I don't see us getting more with a franchise tag. Clearly this defense is not ready this year and I don't see anyway to change that significantly until the offseason.

Honestly Pickens to the Chiefs makes so much sense. Imagine Mahomes scrambling around and tossing one of his patented deep shots. Pickens would feast.

So of course it will never happen.
