It's nice to see encouragement from the coach, but I am curious how he is when he can't be friends with the players and has to be a hardass.

Yea, it's that sort of demeanor combined with the lackadaisical mental mistakes that we saw throughout the season last year that makes me wonder whether or not he can be the bad guy when he needs to be, or whether the players are sufficiently scared of him.

We'll see, I don't have a firm opinion one way or the other, it's just something I'm keeping an eye on, particularly with the offense.

Bingo ! And that’s exactly what this team doesn’t need. The lack of competence/ mental lapses in games and not doing the fundamentals well has been a burden for years. They don’t need a friend to rub their asses . They need someone to put their foot in their asses.

Makes me wonder if that's how Pete Carroll is in practices, or if BS is trying to take it to the next level of chumminess. I honestly don't know.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but does that kind of coach even exist anymore? No idea, but I think probably not. At least not a successful one. Players would start crying and it would cause more problems than just going the "friend" route.

He's consistently communicating the direction, and they either take to it or they don't. I think he's about that consistency, from himself especially-- and then getting in the reps. Like any coach, he's doing what he can under the limitations of the CBA, NFL rules, the Joneses, and constant public scrutiny.

Regarding being a 'hardass', I think he'd pull a play the players aren't absorbing vs pull the players. He's not the kind of coach to say my way or the highway-- if such a thing has ever been a reality in the NFL. My intuition says he understands the reality of the NFL well and makes appropriate compromises as needed.

I think he's about getting the most out of the hand he's been dealt. He's not their pal, few white middle-aged strangers could be, but he has found a way to communicate with all of them, and that's the basis of any coaching.

Bottom line is he's found a way to be effective, and if they can build a fucking defense the right way for once (which actually seems to be happening) we'll see what his true potential can be.

I believe that potential will be realized as a prepared team in position to take its shots over the coming years. I don't know if he can exert his will over an entire team like Jimmy could.

Jimmy had key long-time followers in coaches and players at key positions that could filter out his real message out of his BS. Any leader needs that. Schotty has two strong looking coordinators, and he's prolly a lot closer to Adams at this point. I also think he has Dak. Which other coaches/players would lead/run through a brick wall for him, I'm not sure.

Not finished yet watching yet, but fairly interesting talking about the Jimmy connection and Parcells.

Wish Broaddus would STFU and let him talk more, but still not a bad watch.

Eh. I don’t care how good he was, but there were a lot of times he did not dig a Larry Allen out of his ass. He certainly was not a strong personality that made a mark beyond that. In fact, he was kind of the problem for a while.

I knew you would say something like this. What do I win, Johnny?

But really, how do we know that for sure? He talks here about when he was standing on the table for Shady McCoy and Navarro Bowman, but they (Joneses?) decided to take other people. And as for personality, Broaddus talked about how hard Ciskowski would fight guys on their opinions in the draft room. I always give Jimmy favorites a little slack.

Unfortunately, Broaddus is too poor an interviewer to ask many good questions. Like TC said how when Jimmy was there, the scouts and coaches were on the same page. Somewhere that changed, but no questions as to what happened. And nothing about Jerry's involvement, which in an obvious question that should have been asked.

Broaddus is a shill for the team and they pay him well, I'm sure. No way he is biting that hand.

We do not know a lot about that era, true. But I am pretty sure Lacewell has nothing to lose and could reveal all. Either he was a part of the issue or he is just okay with taking the heat for the misses. There were a lot from the post-Johnson era that had his fingerprints.
