2026 NFL Draft Chatter

New Athletic Mock of top 18 picks:

14. Dallas Cowboys: David Bailey, edge, Texas Tech

One of my favorite pass rushers in the 2025 class was Boston College edge Donovan Ezeiruaku (Dallas’ second-rounder), who had the group’s deepest set of pass-rush moves. Bailey is this year’s version of Ezeiruaku, only he’s a much better athlete with a higher ceiling in terms of production. Micah who?

Random thoughts after the playoff quarterfinals:

-David Bailey is the guy, he was so good in that Oregon game that I think there's a better chance he goes around 4-6 than dropping outside of the top 10. Maybe if we lose against the Giants and end up at 12 a few teams will overthink it because of his lack of size and he'll drop, but at this point I'm mentally writing him off, especially if we win and end up around 14-16. Unfortunately I could easily see Washington taking him since he seems to fit what Quinn loves on the edge.
-Bain was ridiculous against Ohio St., the arm length is still worrisome because it's such an outlier, but his hand usage and bend are so impressive that I'd be willing to overlook it. Of course he's a brick shithouse against the run and plays with great motor. I think there's a better chance of him dropping than Bailey just because the arm length is such a historical rarity, but I still don't think he makes it to 15ish. If he had just average arm length he'd be a lock top 5-7 pick.
-I really like Romello Height and Akheem Mesidor, the "other guys" next to Bailey and Bain, but they're both going to be 25 when next season starts and I don't think you can spend a 1st on that. If we trade down 10-15 slots into the 35-40ish range I think you consider them there.
-Mauigoa was very good against Ohio St. as well, really locked down guys who are going to be drafted this year in Caden Curry and Kenyatta Jackson, although I never really got a good look at him vs. Reese. I think he'll be the first OL taken but if he's available when we pick I think you have to give him some consideration if the top defensive guys are gone.
-Love Keionte Scott as a slot CB, I think we need to prioritize tackling and physicality in the run game in our CB's going forward (obviously they have to be able to cover too), and he definitely has it. If we trade down and add a few extra picks I'm definitely considering him in the 2nd/3rd.
-Sonny Styles missed his first tackle all year against Miami, and I say that as a compliment. One of the things we're sorely missing defensively is reliable, solid tackling, and this guy brings it in a 6-5, 240 frame while also being the "green dot" for their defense.
-Caleb Downs was all over the place even in the loss, showing why he's an elite (if somewhat limited) prospect. I think he's basically a slightly better Brian Branch, an excellent box safety who probably lacks the length/range to play as a single-high centerfielder. Maybe we get lucky and teams overthink it like Kyle Hamilton and even Branch himself.
-Not as enthused with CJ Allen anymore, I don't think he's a consideration with our higher 1st and I have Styles solidly ahead of him. Would consider him with our later 1 though.
-Mark Fletcher (Miami RB) would be an interesting name if he comes out, doesn't seem like someone who will go especially high and I could see him dropping to the 4th. I want another physical runner behind Williams and Fletcher is definitely that.
-I really love some of the DT depth in this class, guys like Lee Hunter, Christen Miller, Zxavian Harris, Bear Alexander and Ahmad Moten. I know we're stacked there but if some of those guys are available on day 3 I'm not hesitating.
-Not Cowboys related, but I'm not thrilled with Mendoza as the top pick, seems like his ceiling is someone like Goff. He looks like a very robotic, managed QB who isn't asked to do much. He has a big arm and solid mechanics but more than anything I think he's a function of how well constructed the Indiana team is overall, especially their run game. He only averages 23 pass attempts a game, which is an insanely low number these days, especially for a non-running QB.

Right now I think if any of these defensive players are available with our top pick you just take them, pending what we do in FA (lol): Reese, Bailey, Bain, Faulk, Styles, Downs

After those guys I think you have to start seriously thinking about Mauigoa and Love if available, or obviously a trade down, because I don't really see any other blue chip defensive prospects. If McCoy and/or Delane test really well I think they're in the mix too, but given McCoy's injury and Delane's questionable size I need to see some solid measurements and eye-popping numbers (i.e. 4.4 40 or lower) to say they're clear takes over Mauigoa/Love, who I think are top 10 prospects in the class.

And for the record, I'm not enthused about the idea of a guy like Fano at 15ish, so it's not an OL thing with Mauigoa, it's really just a "clear BPA" type scenario.

As long as Mosher isn’t the guy running the draft, sure. We’ve seen his quality mock drafts already.

And, if Bailey or Bain is there, you draft one and then do your damndest to try and trade up to get the other.

No second, no third, and already given up next year’s extra first.

You take one and then try your damndest to trade down and recoup some picks.

If there isn’t a chance at both pass rushers, I agree. If there’s a chance at both, I’d still consider trading up.

I don't think Bailey will be there but there's a slight chance, whereas there was no chance at 14-16.

I also think Downs might even be in play, there's a long history of safeties like him dropping further than they should have and if he doesn't run a super fast 40 (low 4.4's) I think he could easily drop to us.

I’d just like to point out, we spent a first, a second, and a third to bolster a team that went 7-9 basically.

Good thing we can have them for more than just this year.

That’s not certain on Pickens yet.

… and it isn’t exactly a winning argument to say we can have these players for longer when they went 7-8-1.

The offense deserves next to no blame for how the season went, they obviously weren't perfect and had some poor stretches, but we'd have easily been 11-6 with anything close to an average defense.

Here's why I think Downs could make his way to 12:

Kyle Hamilton - 14th in 2022
Derwin James - 17th in 2018

Both were universally considered top 10, arguably even top 5 prospects the years they came out. You could even throw Brian Branch in there, a guy who was thought to be a top 20ish pick who dropped to 45.

Now it may come down to whether or not Downs runs a 40 because Hamilton ran a 4.59 and Branch ran a 4.58, although James ran a 4.47 and still dropped. If Downs doesn't run a sub-4.45 I think there's a very solid chance he falls.

Maybe this is the year where teams look at that track record and say "fuck it", and take him in the top 10, but given the recent history and the fact that Downs is relatively undersized (probably similar to Branch who is just under 6-0 and 190), I think you have to entertain the possibility.

Obviously I'd take him without hesitating at 12.

Nobody is going to want to hear it but with us moving up to 12 I think Love could definitely be in play.

I can't see him going top 7, could possibly see the Saints/Chiefs taking him, but if he makes it past those two I don't think there's any chance that Cincinnati (Chase Brown) or Miami (Achane) takes him.

I have no idea if they'd consider going RB that high now that the Jap analytics guy is whispering into ears, but with how much Schottenheimer loves RB's who can catch the ball, with how much he just wants to run the ball in general, and of course Jerry's residual love for star RB's, I wouldn't be shocked at all if they took him if it came down to Love vs. someone like Styles.

Pending whatever happens in FA (lol) and with the DC hire/scheme, I think this is how I'm looking at the top of the draft for us, subject to change of course:

1. Reese
2. Bailey
3. Downs
4. Bain
5. Styles
6. Faulk
7. Love
8. Mauigoa

I assume one of those 8 should be available once you throw in 2 QB's and a WR or two before we pick. Delane and/or McCoy could work their way into the 5-8 range if they test well.

Arvel Reese is obviously the apple of my eye.

I dunno, I think I might like TJ Parker more than many other of the DL prospects. Bain is a fat ass, Faulk reminds me more of a Chris Canty. Bailey gives me Brandon Graham vibes which is fine.

Parker has the length and the burst. Wouldn’t surprise me if he rises.

Delane gives me Mo Claiborne flashbacks. Downs looks impactful but he will be more successful as a fly around in the box safety, not an Ed Reed.

I dunno, maybe I do go OT and Edge with Parker.

Can’t see the value in RB. Bring back Javonte and give Blue touches. And Mafah. There are your three. Dak led the league in passing attempts and our WR situation demands the ball. Not sure it’s wise to go RB here unless you think Love is a Hall of Famer type talent.
