2026 Cowboys Free Agency Thread…

Right, that's the issue. As far as I'm concerned, at 12, Bain, Bailey, and Reese if you want to consider him a pass rusher are worth it.

If they're all gone, I'm fine with Downs, Delane, or Styles.

I doubt strongly that all three would be there, but hypothetically I'd take Styles, Delane, Downs in that order.

For me it’s Styles, Downs, trade down.

I’m not taking a CB straight up at 12.

Yes but if the logic for taking Downs over Styles is that “you can’t pass on an Ed Reed talent,” well, he’s not Ed Reed.
Nobody has said he's Ed Reed. I was the one that brought him up. And I only stated that an Ed Reed/Troy Polomalu kind of player can transform a defense. And that type of player might be more important in that aspect than even a MLB would be in a 3-4 defense. Especially considering you can get other really good MLBer prospects after Styles in guys like CJ Allen, Anthony Hill Jr., Jacob Rodriguez, etc... I think the dropoff from Downs to Theineman and McNeil-Warren is bigger.

I remember saying I wanted to trade down and take Reed instead of Roy...

But yeah, for example some idiots thought Roy Williams was a better safety prospect than Ed Reed. Clearly people didn't know what he would become. They saw a mediocre tackler and small size.
I had this exact debate with someone back during the ESPN message board days. I was on the Reed train and was told I was nuts for including him in the Williams conversation

Guy had something insane like 17 INTs in his last two years of college. The writing was there. I was on the same messages board having the same debates at the time. Roy was the draft consensus better player. The draft consensus is wrong sometimes. Sort of like CJ Allen is supposedly the second best LBer in this draft. I don't think he is.

I agree...

I think there's a good chance he's Derwin James-caliber with upside for better.
Derwin James was much higher rated pre draft than Downs and fell all the way to 17. I think Minkah Fitzpatrick coming out the same year diluted the attention each got individually. Downs isn’t either of these guys.

Downs has the safety attention mostly to himself, and he never even ran at the combine because of his torn meniscus.

He plays wreckless and a little small for his size, and even though they are the exact same size I feel like Fitzpatrick is more physical and definitely a better ballhawk.
