He wouldn't get to pick his team if claimed. He's not a vested veteran and subject to waiver claims. And if he's not claimed, could be signed to our PS. Archer above said there is no truth to his asking to be released, so he very well could resign with us if not claimed.

But I'd be surprised if the Jets didn't claim him. They're only sitting with two QBs right now, and he'd more than likely step in as the backup and have an actual shot at winning the starting job there eventually.

If true -- and maybe it's not -- this sounds like one of those NBA things where they're so focused on "doing right by the player" they hurt the team. I'll never understand that.

Or maybe no one was interested. Milton stunk out loud last year and maybe teams didn't buy that his massive flaws wouldn't come back in real games.

You waive a guy like Carson to get a nondescript RB on the roster, not an asset like Milton. Teams would fork over a 7th just for him to be their tush push specialist - a play where he was virtually unstoppable this preseason.

Even if there was no attractive offer on the table, that could change in a few weeks when, inevitably, at least a couple of quarterbacks will be injured.
 
I mean, this team did expose Flournoy to waivers last year. Think how stupid that was.

So it could just be stupidity.

I mean there is a LBer/safety/corner/WR/QB I'd have cut before Milton.

So I am annoyed. Does it really change the trajectory of this season? No not at all. Either Milton or Howell were going to be the backup. And my guess is it was going to be Howell because of the experience factor. But it also means we are shopping for all new backup QBs again next offseason. Where Milton could have continued to be groomed and would have been a backup this year and still been around next year on the rookie deal hopefully continuing to get better.

Even though he showed some promise then, he wasn't even close then to what he's shown since. At the time, he had 10 career receptions. So, if the Cowboys were stupid for exposing him to waivers, were all the other teams stupid for not claiming him?

I don't think it was some big stretch to think he'd clear waivers.

I think the simplest explanation for them not trading him is they still want him and expect to sign him to the practice squad.

I think this is exactly it. And I hope he makes it to the practice squad too. We are going to have 3 QBs. If he doesn't make it to the practice squad we will have to bring in a different QB for the practice squad.

The only question is if another team claims him.

Right. And also tells me there were no teams that offered even a 7th for him, which we turned down.

If that was the case, we'd either keep him outright or take the trade. Because knowing that somebody was interested enough to trade a pick for him, they sure as hell would claim him if they could get him for free.

So the next question is, was it all a lie that teams called about our QBs? Or was it that they were calling for Sam Howell? My guess is no one actually called.

Still, it would have been a disaster if he'd been claimed. The guy is set to be really good this year.
