I agree. I think they don’t have much faith left in Steele, and are kinda desperate considering the potential of the rest of the team. Unfortunately, starting tackles don’t grow on trees, so you end up doing stuff like this.

Even if he is the starter by midseason he wasn't worth a fourth round pick for half a season unless he is a really good starter and I seriously doubt that. This trade is on par with the Mingo trade except the experiment will be much shorter lived.

I disagree, if he's a starter it's worth a 3rd-4th pick swap. And that's if he's mediocre.

A good starting Tackle is worth more than what they gave up, maybe a lot more.

It's a gamble for sure because he looks like a pretty flawed player. But it's a small gamble because it's only dropping down a round in the middle of the draft.

Especially if it's a strong draft like people are saying. They might still get a 3rd round caliber player in the fourth anyway.

I don't understand why some people (not you) are frothing at the mouth over this. Even if it doesn't work out it's fine. The biggest issue if it doesn't work out won't be that they lost a little draft compensation, the biggest issue will be a problem at
Tackle. If nothing else at least this is a reasonable attempt to solve it with a pedigreed player.

It's different because they're desperate for depth at OT, and maybe even for a starter at RT.

Mingo was traded for and never had any real clear value or role, it was a swing on developing a guy they liked in the draft. With Jones he's pretty clearly better than Shelton and Thomas, and has a clear role right away.

If something happens to either of the OT's he's playing, they knew they had a potential train wreck on their hands at swing tackle and paid a price for a smaller potential train wreck.

Nobody knows how strong next year's draft will be outside of the top 10-20 picks, when people talk about how strong it is that's what they mean, that the talent at the very top is stronger than most years.

Literally nobody has any idea what the mid rounds will look like relative to other years.

If he had two years left on his deal I'd feel pretty good about the move, I'm not especially worried about dropping from our pick in the 3rd to the Steelers pick in the 4th, but the fact that it's very likely a 1-year rental is the big issue for me. If he plays 2-3 games and looks halfway decent and then signs a small 2 year extension I'd consider that a win, or if he supplants Steele and then moves on I'd still consider that a win.

A 4th (roughly) is a steep price for one year of insurance.
 
I watched all of Jones' pass pro reps from this preseason and he definitely looked like ass, better than Thomas and definitely Shelton, but still ass.

But then I went back and watched pass pro reps last year against the Packers and Browns (Parsons and Garrett) and Seahawks and Patriots (two very good defenses but lacking elite edge rushers) and he actually looked somewhat respectable, even holding up 1-on-1 a few times times against Parsons and Garrett. Of course he also got beat pretty cleanly his fair share against those two, but no worse than about 80% of the other OT's in the league.

He actually looked like something resembling a starting OT against the Seahawks and Patriots.

The big question with him is whether he'll get back to what he was before the neck injury or if he's just complete ass now. Apparently he couldn't lift weights until just May, so if I had to guess this is the FO gambling on him being able to work himself back into his pre-injury form and potentially replacing Steele, and if not he's still an upgrade as a 3rd OT over Shelton/Thomas for this year.
