Yeah I hate the idea that government is somehow going to dictate these rules. But they are absolutely necessary to protect college athletics.

And despite my dislike for government involvement I can also recognize that schools are highly tied to government funding. So it's not like these institutions are just running their own thing and government is putting their greedy hands into the cookie jar.

Oh, I get it. I just don't like it. What's the point of the NCAA governing board if they can't govern and need the government to intervene?

The ncaa has been toothless for way too long now. Not sure why they don't even try to enforce things anymore. Don't know if they think they'd lose in court, or if they just surrendered in 2020 like so many other institutions. Won't get into it here.

I will. They have given up because of government intervention just like this. Someone sues the NCAA and they lose. Over and over again. They government (federal courts and Congress) has pulled their teeth.
 
I don't think it's that, I think this is more the government having to step in because the NCAA won't and people are asking for it. I think losing these court cases happens more often because local judges want to get reelected, and that won't happen if they don't let State U's players play.

But where I was going was it seems like around 2020 when they quit trying, and I suspect it had something to do with the summer of love, etc. They didn't want to appear being oppressive to these poor players, most of whom are minorities.
