JMO, but major mistake. Forget this garbage, "We're just thinking of this fine young man recovering from his addiction." Everyone knows that's a total lie and just makes you look worse.

Don't say anything. Just accept your black hat. The kid is good, the legal system says he can play, so he's going to play. End of story.

Hell, I would even be okay with, "He will bring a great deal of value to our football team and we want him on the filed, but he needs to get this mess he created cleaned up before he thinks about football, and we are going to help him do that". But, this whole "we are only looking out for his well being and recovery efforts first and foremost" is very obvious pandering and it pisses me off.
 
It's funny because I am an outside observer being a fan of northern teams, so I don't have a horse in this race (pun intended) outside of a general belief in maintaining the integrity of the sport.

I had sort of a benign view of Tech's role in this, given that it didn't happen on their watch.

This definitely makes me look at Tech in a worse light.

Right, it's like they don't realize they'd be loved if they refused to play the guy. Now it's the opposite.

But, I get it. They pay guys huge salaries to win games. In the SEC I doubt they'd make these excuses about it being for the wellbeing of the young man. They'd just own it.

No, I really think so. They might mention it in a statement, but I don't think they'd go so far in trying to make it look like they were just being good Samaritans for this young man and his addiction. I think an LSU would have the attitude that this guy is a good player and he's playing for us, and tough nuts if you don't like it.

I used to read some SEC boards years ago and their attitude on paying players and recruiting was basically, "Yeah, we cheated better than you, so what? We got the player and you didn't and that's what matters." Not that this is cheating, but the principle is pretty similar.
