2025 College Football Chatter

I think 16 is way too many. The 16th best team is never actually the best team and shouldn't even be in. I think 12 is fine. Just change the locations, and get rid of the JMUs being in.

This is exactly right and that's what people who favored that miss. It made everything so hyper meaningful that any slipup rendered everything after completely meaningless.

That's what they said about 8 teams, and 12 teams, and yet here we are with the 10th seed in the championship.

And let's be real, 16 teams will probably happen and it will be because of money not any of the logical or competitive reasons we're discussing.

Oh yeah, it will definitely happen. But because of money, not because it's any better at determining the best team in the country.

That's completely true. I'm guessing they're looking at the basketball tournament and truthfully the tournament having so many teams was never about all those teams have a shot at the title. The vast majority do not.

But a lot of the teams take pride in making the sweet sixteen or elite eight or final four. Those types of things still matter to a lot of programs and they can use those types of performances - even without winning a title - to elevate the program in future years. Even winning one game in fact. Those types of performances greatly elevate a program because the players are in the spotlight and getting noticed.

To me the ideal number is 8. Not only do you get rid of some of the round one fluff games, but you have much more interesting bowl games outside of the CFP.
 
I'd be fine with either 8 or 16, 12 is dumb and drop the pretense of having these pointless teams like JMU in it.

But do you really want to get rid of the Texas AM first round game against Miami for example? You go to 8 teams and you cut out the two fluff teams but you also cut out Miami. A Miami team that has now won 3 games including one against Ohio State and a fun game last night against Ole' Miss. Maybe this season is just an outlier but this season tells me we shouldn't go down to 8 teams. It tells me 16 may just be perfect.

Now admittedly this year there were a ton of 1 and 2 loss teams. And frankly 3 Loss Alabama should not have been in it. But you expand and 16 and you let Notre Dame in it. You let Texas in it. I don't know, just sounds like more fun to me. But I get it, in another year maybe the results are a bunch of mediocre 3 loss teams in the playoffs that don't sound interesting at all.

8 is way too few teams.

The NFL only has 32 teams and yet 4 teams from each conference wouldn't be anywhere enough, so for roughly 50 legitimate participants, there's no way 8 is enough playoff entrants.

Yeah, but with 16, the vast majority of the other bowl games will suck.

And frankly college football is different now too. You're not going to see the Blue Blood programs just dominating every year because of the NIL. A backup RB at Alabama is going to go get his cash at another school now. I think college football is going to see more parity because of the movement of players. Which means an expanded playoff does make more sense and is more exciting.

Anyway, I'm not that concerned about teams being "left out" as much as I am about fairness is getting rid of the bye's. So 16 just makes sense. And yeah I think teams like Texas (not a Texas fan at all) and Notre Dame could have made this year even more entertaining for the playoffs. Plus as someone who loves watching the top draft prospects, I want more guys playing as opposed to sitting out this time of year.

They already do frankly. Every good college player is sitting out of those games. I mean other than watching Iowa against Vandy, I didn't watch a single bowl game outside of the playoffs. You don't even recognize the guys playing in most of those bowl games because the draft eligible guys are all sitting out. Or Notre Dame is just saying fuck it all together.
 
Yeah, all the other bowls are just used as practice days for next season anymore. It's almost like the Senior Bowl where the practices mean more than the game itself.

I will say my one problem with only eight is you might have a team outside that number win, and that's really only because the ranking process can't be trusted with, for instance, SEC teams getting way more credit than they should. Shame there's nothing in between that can be done without the byes.

I mean unless you're a fan of one of the teams in the bowl game, is anyone really watching with any excitement the bowl games? The college football landscape has completely changed. We will never go back to the days where making a BCS Bowl game feels like a national championship for a team like Iowa or Texas Tech or whoever. Now that feeling is going to come from those teams making it to the playoffs.
 
I honestly never even cared for the Bowl games outside of the marquee ones:

Rose, Orange, Cotton, Sugar, Fiesta, Peach, and Citrus.

Were any of you guys really watching the Meineke Car Care Bowl or the Camping World bowl games before?

Yep. 16 teams in the playoffs means more good postseason games, not less. Name the early rounds the pop tart bowl and whatever else if that makes it better.

That's true, and honestly because of the nature of the scheduling and conference games and conference championships and so forth, there's not much they can do about that. It's kind of impossible to weight playing Illinois versus playing Nebraska versus playing Utah or whomever else from one year to the next.

And given that there's no way to fairly assess the difference between the 4th ranked team versus 8 or 10 or 12, it's better to be more inclusive (God help me for using that term) than less.
