In all fairness if we didn't have Tyler Smith I'd agree with you. LT is a position you don't jack around with. We are in a unique position where we saw Tyler as a rookie look really good at LT. I've always had the opinion that should be his long term spot.

I agree Tyler should be the guy long term.

I'd also agree with moving on from Tyron if the plan failed last year. But it worked and he was - still - as good as just about any LT in football.

Now, we have to hope that Tyler is at least nearly as good as Tyron, AND that a guy like Bass or a rookie is not a complete disaster. All while having to find a swing tackle AND hoping that Steele isn't a fucking retard again.

Most of that could be fixed by resigning Tyron. But hey, he's too expensive and stuff.

He is a better run blocker than Tyron. And Bass is a powerful dude. I think that combo gives you more in the run game. Now Tyron was basically perfect in pass protection most of the time which can't be overlooked.

I don't know if I agree with that. I don't think Tyler/Bass gives you more in the run game than Tyron/Tyler. In fact that sounds ridiculous to me.

That's because you don't like Bass that much. You also blame the RB more for the poor run game than the blocking. I blame the blocking more than the RBs. If Tyron was doing good things in the run game last year we would have dominated running the ball to the left. We didn't because Tyron doesn't have that much power anymore. But his pass blocking was excellent and those grips for hands haven't slipped one bit.

It's not that I don't like Bass, it's just that I'm not quick to anoint him after a couple nice games.

And the idea that he is a better run blocker than Tyron is absurd.

And yes, the run blocking hasn't been good overall and yes, the running backs haven't been good enough either.
 
Tyler/Bass won't be better in the run game but Mims/Tyler might be, or Tyler/Fautanu.

Mims would be the riskiest given his lack of experience but I think Fautanu or Barton would step in as high level starters immediately.

Tyler is a great run blocker and Bass is a really good run blocker. Give me a high level run blocking center and I'm good. Bass isn't going to be a better LG than Tyler was but Tyler absolutely gives you more running power at LT.
 
I'll say it again -- not that it's a reality -- it sure would be nice if a mid-round draft pick like a Richards could develop enough to, say, play a good guard while Tyler goes to LT.

We all accept that these imperfect guys like Richards aren't ready right away and need a redshirt year to develop, but damn, we could really use one to be good enough to start. It's going to kind of suck if none of Richards/Waletzko/Ball can play at all, or are only deep backups. Because we almost don't have enough picks to fill all the holes we have. (And that's even if they can all play, which won't be the case.)

Yeah I hope Richards can become the utility backup. Swing tackle, guard sort of combo. That's probably wishful thinking but essentially Edoga last year. But God hopefully better.

I also think Barton and Powers could probably play guard if you need them too. Frazier probably could as well. I don't think that's a hard transition necessarily. Plus a number of these first round OTs have potential at guard.

You're basing this statement on his 2 whole starts last year?

He was a UDFA and played only 29% of their offensive snaps. It would be foolhardy to rely on that or draw any conclusions on his abilities.

Yeah, 29% of snaps is significant enough to start judging a guy. And yeah, I liked him in the draft where he was a LT at Oregon who was a great run blocker.

I really do like him, but I would not move forward as if he's a sure thing.

I also think the Tyron Smith 'health management plan' is not as beneficial to the team as some fans think.

Sure skipping most of the practice reps during the week helped him take the field on Sundays. But at what cost? I think Tyron not being able to take physical reps during the week screwed with the OL's continuity to some degree during the actual games.

It was nice having him out there playing on Sundays but I can't help but wonder if some of the struggles we saw with the Cowboys ground game were directly attributed to a lack of full speed practice reps.
