Im guessing, but the loophole involves the voidable years that automatically void. So, Dak would have to agree to those extra years.

He’s not going to agree to an extra 1-2 years at this contract’s rate, when he will likely fetch 4+ years at a higher rate.

Yeah I think the point is they don't void until after 2024. Which is why you can use them as an automatic switch right now to convert base salary to signing bonus. This is something the Cowboys have been doing for forever on contracts. It's part of why I have said the cap is just an excuse. It's easily manipulated to whatever you want.

Prescott’s 2024 salary is $29M. But don’t you need Prescott’s consent to convert to signing bonus?

Even if you can switch, you’re only saving half of that $29M to reduce 2024’s cap hit by $14.5M (so still a 2024 $44.5M cap hit), correct? I don’t think 2026 is in play to spread that $29M conversion.

No you spread 29 over 3 years, 2024, 2025, 2026. Thus saving 20 mil on the cap. And supposedly its built into the contract. He has 2 void years for this very purpose.

If this is the case, then Prescott $40M 2024 cap hit and plays for Cowboys. After 2024 season, though, no contract extension and Prescott is a UFA, but our 2025 still gets $46.5M cap hit and 2026 gets $21.0M cap hit, correct?

Not sure on the exact numbers but yeah 2025 would be like a dead cap of 46 mil. Might even be 56 because once the voided 2026 drops off, you probably can't spread it to 2026 any longer. That's why his cap number right now in 2025 is 36 mil if this contract expires. Which would bump up another 20 mil basically. So ugh yeah, that's what pushing the money out does.

Of course that one year of pain probably comes with a Trey Lance or someone starting in 2025 on the cheap. And if Dak does something special next year you could extend him and avoid that pain.

Since you mention him...

Does anyone here think Lance can play at all? I know the tape of him is limited at best, but what do you think?

I vote no. I think that was probably a wasted pick. But Mike is a good QB teacher so maybe the behind the scenes coaching will make a difference. So I hope so... But I'd still vote no.

I agree although I am curious. I think a full healthy season for him on the bench has helped him develop.

Same here. Even if he never makes it, I do want to see him play some and see how he's developed.

I will say that I didn't think Jordan Love was any good when he was drafted, either. Sitting and observing and drilling obviously helped him a lot, so it can make a big difference. Not that Lance will be that good, but maybe he can at least be a decent backup or something.
