2024 Random Cowboys Stuff Thread

Cliff Notes:

  • Prescott will be under contract in 2024 for nearly $60M. This is the 2nd highest cap charge in the NFL this upcoming year. Nothing is guaranteed.
  • If they wanted to cut him, they would accelerate that $60M on top of the $-20M they are already over the cap. He would be June 1st cut and about all what the Cowboys could reasonably do is pay their draft picks and survive.
  • He would have to waive his no trade clause to get traded. Then they would have to eat the $61M or so.
  • He has two void years in the contract for 2025-2026. He cannot be franchised. This means he is an FA with a max compensatory pick of a 3rd round choice in 2026.
  • Prescott has all of the leverage. If they are going to extend him, they might as well do it now and roll and prorate his money.
  • The best way out is to extend Prescott and go all in via FA in 2024 and 2025.
  • In other words, we are fucked.

I would cut him and just roll with lance. If we tank we get a high enough pick to draft a qb and a new coaching staff.

Why wouldn't he if he knew the team didn't want him?
To force them to cut him so he can become a free agent.

Although I don’t think the Cowboys would cut Prescott, this is what Derek Carr did to the Raiders.

Rejected Saints trade and signed with them after being cut. Why screw your new team of draft picks if you can join them for the same price

Yep.

How do offsets work when a player with guaranteed money is cut?

I don’t know what you mean entirely by offsets.

I know there’s pre and post June 1st. If cut post-June 1st, his $61M dead cap is spread to 2025 ($25M for 2024 and $36M for 2025).

If someone signs Dak after the Cowboys cut him, I don’t believe Cowboys get any relief. This isn’t waivers.

Cowboys got diddly-squat relief when Zeke went to the Patriots.

A value up to which his new team has to pick up in salary to offset guaranteed salary Dallas would be on the hook for.

I looked up Dak's guaranteed salary number and it be $0.

Man, the Jones know how to get raped in contract negotiations. Let's put all the guaranteed money in the signing bonus... sheesh.
