Elway was still damn good.

Sure was.

I still think he's the most complete all around QB I've ever seen.

It's hard to call anyone "better" than Brady, but Elway was the prototype and the best l around QB I ever saw from a physical standpoint.

There was nothing he couldn't do.

He couldn’t win a SB without Terrell Davis.

I'd never put Kelly over Aikman. Sure, he threw for all those yards in that offense, but he wasn't a better QB.

I thought we were just listing the great QBs from that era, not necessarily ones that were specifically better than Aikman.

You'd never get me to believe that Young was better than Aikman for example.

But I'd say that you could put any of those guys in there and you'd be set at QB.

Hell, I never thought Aikman was the best QB in football and yet what did it matter in the end?

Not just from memory but going on stats. I looked at QBs who the majority of their career was prior to 2000. Favre played until 2010 so his numbers are skewed.

Steve Young 64.3
Montana 63.2
Favre 62. (2000 and prior 59.9)
Troy 61.5
Jim Kelly 60.1
Ken Stabler 59.8
Danny White 59.7
Marino 59.4
Ken Anderson 59.3
Kosar 59.3

Completion percents?

If Troy played now, when you can't even breathe on the receiver, he'd have been above 70.

True. And not just that, but also back then you would see west coast QBs always had higher completion percentages because of the types of throws they typically employed (easy high percentage routes). Nowadays just about every scheme does it.

Aikman being that high back then without the benefit of playing in a west Coast offense was pretty impressive.

So yeah, he'd certainly be north of 70%.

I didn't quote it, but I was really responding to Smitty saying Troy was trailing Kelly until he got the rings. Of course someone posted seconds before I did so that wasn't clear. Happens every time I don't use the quote function.

But I don't remember Kelly being considered better than Troy anyway. (Of course he was older and had a big head start.) But I don't remember the obsession with stats as much back then either. Seems most people realized that Troy wasn't asked to throw it as much with Emmitt and didn't penalize him for it.
