But a lot of shtick from Berman, be it "rumbling, bumbling, stumbling" or nicknames like Curtis "My Favorite" Martin.

Sports Reporters was great. The mainstays were Schaap, Lupica, Albom and Ryan.
And that disgusting looking dude from Philly (IIRC) who messed around with kids. :puke

Sure, but at the time people actually found it entertaining.

But more importantly, while he may have been a bit goofy, he wasn't giving outlandish takes or saying things for shock value.

When it was his turn to give his opinion on a team or player, it was always serious and respectable, and that's the difference between then and now.

It really was.

Back in the early 90s when football was an obsession for me, I'd always wake up at like 7 am to catch everything leading up to NFL Sunday and it always started with the Sports Reporters.

That was really the very last show of its kind.

I wouldn't really put catch phrases and silly noises into what he's talking about here. Back then, it was pretty unbiased reporting all around. Today, it's all shock, all the time. You pick a team to hate or a team to slurp. And go over the top in doing so.

NBA Inside Stuff back in the 90s with Ahmad Rashad was really cool too.

Even if it was a "fun" themed show, it was good entertainment.

It really is a shame to see how bad sports coverage has fallen compared to what it was just 20 years ago.

Because it wasn't.

I'm 43, so I grew up with some 80s coverage, but mostly 90s as that is when I entered my adolescence and was old enough to comprehend what I was watching.

And even as a 13 year old kid, I used to love watch the Sports Reporters on ESPN on Sunday mornings. It was real journalists doing real journalism.

Dick Schapp was great and I really enjoyed watching him.

I remember reading Dr. Z. in Sports Illustrated. And while some people didn't care for him, the guy was an encyclopedia of football knowledge and I loved reading about his history of the game.

And for as much shit as Chris Berman gets, who here didn't love NFL Primetime with him and Tom Jackson? It was just 2 guys going over the highlights of all of Sunday's games with no gimmicks or nonsense.

Tom Gannon was a great guy to hear talk baseball and NBC's coverage of the NBA was top notch.

My point is, TV and sports media coverage absolutely was nothing like this when we were younger and it's sad to see how it's all turned into the sports version of MTV in that it's all just trash television that makes you feel dumber after having watched it.

I literally don't watch ANYTHING in regards to sports shows anymore, not even the pregame stuff on FOX or CBS.

I basically just tune into the games and that's it.

Sports media used to be about reporting, perhaps even teaching in some cases, nowadays you can only find that in small corners of social media.

What you're calling sports media is basically just a variant of clickbait social media that is aiming to generate emotional reactions, not actually report facts, let alone teach. There's a reason that social media is a huge driver of depression in society at large and it's because so much of it is meant to generate emotion and nothing else, and most of that is aimed at generating negative emotion since studies show that negative emotion drives action way more than positive emotion.

The vast majority of it is in complete bad faith, especially the bullshit talking head shows. It's completely useless and I'd rather listen to two random schmucks on the street talk about football than these morons they put on TV because they're not even real people providing real opinions, they're caricatures playing a role, almost like a WWF event.

Berman never hid his fondness for the Bills, picking them to beat us in both Super Bowls.

Or the 49ers for that matter.

But to his credit, he never tried to discredit the Cowboys in any way and that goes back to what some of us have been saying about the differences between then and now.

He didn't say stupid shit about the Cowboys just because he didn't like them.

Bills and 49ers. Despite the fact that I agree generally with the sports reporting nostalgia we're talking about here, Berman was always a douchenozzle.
Berman was the first Stephen A.
