Didn't want to clog up the Free Agency thread, but what are we going to do now at guard? Move Tyler inside? What about when Tyron inevitably gets hurt? Sign a cheap vet G when Jones Family Yacht time ends? Predetermine to draft one in the first two rounds? That always ends well.

I'm not saying you had to match anything anyone offered to McGovern, but I do hate that IMO we had the OL pretty settled and playing pretty well, and now we have a bunch of moving parts again. I think this is a bigger deal than most, I guess.

Farniok started a few games last year and was fine, I think it was the Bengals, first Giants and first Skins games, so I'd guess they feel ok about him having to start a few games if need be.

I also expect them to draft an interior OL relatively high, possibly even as high as the first with Torrence. Ideally we'd get someone like Avila in the 2nd.

Avila would be a great pick but he might not make it all the way down since he can play all five positions.

I like Farniok, but more as a smart, versatile backup type. He seems a bit smaller than ideal to be a longer term starter.

And I don't like saying, "We have to draft position x in the first two rounds." That's how we got Bossman.

I just hate that we were settled there -- with mostly young guys -- and now we have another hole to fill somehow.

And I'm really not going to like it if the plan is just to move Tyler in and play Tyron at LT. But I bet that's what they're planning. Tyron is one of Jerry's Made Guys.

Yea, we'll see, there's lots of depth in that late 1/2nd round range on the interior OL though between Torrence, Mauch, Schmitz, Avila and Tippmann. You might even be able to throw Bergeron in there also.

One of them should be there in the 2nd, although I'd be fine moving down in the first and taking one of the higher ranked guys.

I think Farniok has put on weight. He is listed at 311, that should be plenty. His injury slowed him last year but he could be ok. Maybe even closer to McGovern level than we all realize.

That is almost certainly the plan.

The other problem is we have to draft reciever, we have to draft NT, we have to draft a RB, we have to draft guard. Some say we have to draft corner. Pretty soon there aren't enough picks for the holes.
Exactly.

On a positive note, that was 10 years ago but Jerry looks 20 years older now.

We did something similar last year too, we had a gaping hope at LG, had cut gotten rid of Cooper and needed someone to replace Gregory.

What'd we do?

Tyler Smith, Sam Williams, Jalen Tolbert.

Don't be surprised if we spend our first 3 picks this year to fill holes, likely WR, TE and OL if I had to guess, pending any actual legitimate moves made in FA or trade (lol).

Worked with 2 of the 3 last year. But WR basically helped sink our season. That's why this method is a bad idea. You're banking on nailing all your picks right away. And frankly Tyler was mostly at LT. McGovern was why we survived at LG. Hopefully Farniok can do the same for us next year.

That's exactly what he'll be. He'll probably have to play a few games but that's the job of a backup. I don't think he's particularly worse than McGovern.

That's clearly the plan. Had they re-signed McGovern that still would have been the plan, which is why you don't re-sign McGovern.

And honestly, I get the injury concerns but that aside, an oline of Tyron / Tyler / Biadasz/ Martin / Steele has the potential to be extremely good.

Right now you're likely to see more Tyler/Farniok/Biadasz/Martin/Steele next season than that one. You say handful games, I say Tyron has played 33% of games. So odds are you'll see far more of this line.

I'm not convinced we have to draft a guard or a NT, though I'd do it if one made sense at one of our selections.

It's a gamble that Tyron can play the majority of the season. But I don't think it's a guarantee he won't and I think it's worth swinging for the fences given that we've literally seen Tyler/ Farniok/ Biadasz/ Martin / Steele and it was just fine.

It's not like the bottom will fall out unless there's a 2020 style rash of injuries and even then they'd be in trouble no matter what they do.

And yes I think they need a couple more pieces for depth but that's true regardless. You just don't pay for that.

And I do feel the need to reiterate that swapping Tyron for McGovern only saves you about a million cap dollars and doesn't get you significantly better (and maybe not at all better) than Tyler/ Farniok so I really don't see the point in doing that. Tyron / Tyler is a big big upgrade if it pays off.

I feel like we may have had this same conversation last year. But sure, NT is mostly because its the best way to fix the run defense. Or at least keep it close to where we were at the end of last year.

We may have drafted Tyler last year to be a guard. But in the end he was really our LT. And McGovern ended up being that LG. I expect the same this year with Tyler but maybe Farniok is at least this years McGovern. I actually kind of like the guy. I've seen promise with him.

I do think we need a Hankins type at NT at least. But that doesn't have to be through the draft.
