That doesn’t mean anything until he comes off the ventilator. The ventilator is still doing all the breathing work, but he only needs 50% O2 to keep his saturation levels normal. Last night he was at 100% O2 because his heart had stopped beating and I’m sure his organs had started to shut down. When he comes off the vent and can sustain his O2 levels, that’s when we will know where he is.
I dealt with my dad and his lung transplant, all the ventilator settings and O2 readings are very misleading.
All that matters is can the kid breathe on his own. If there’s any heart or brain damage chances are he will not come off the ventilator.

If I pm you a pic of a rash on my balls, you think you could let me know if the guy is okay?

My friend doesn’t need a bill from a clinic showing up in the mail.

I think it all depends on the underlying trauma... I was just trying to say that the length of time being intubated (within reason) doesn't necessarily determine recovery prognosis.

Yeah it mostly depends on what the actual injury is and how long his brain was without oxygen for.

Ventilators can be tricky. And the longer you're on one the slower the process can be for getting off of it. It's good news to hear progress regardless.

Absolutely. Any progress is a blessing. I’d love to see the guy get up out of there and resume his career.
Now it’s slowly leaked out he has potential lung damage and was resuscitated again when he arrived at the hospital. That’s about the worst news you could hear, because that probably means there is brain damage too.
I really hate commenting at all on it- I have a lot of mixed feelings about the medical profession in general, some of it good but most of it very negative. This is just such a sad story for me, and hits home on a situation I dealt with for 11 months. Anyways, I just keep praying for the kid.

Yeah I've been through a lot of this with my daughter's surgeries. After 3 of them the ventilator process was so different for all 3. The third one was especially rough because while they tested her for covid before surgery she had actually picked up influenza and they never tested for anything like that.

Damn, so she had the flu while on the vent? That sounds awful. Hope things are okay.

As Milti said, I know modern medicine can be amazing but I have a pretty negative view of our medical system overall.

Weird, huh?

Covid has made us mistrust a lot of things, and rightfully so.

Even beyond the Covid fiasco... Just Monday I was at one of the most acclaimed hospitals in Dallas and it was an absolute disaster. Worse, only about one in 10 workers seemed to care one bit. Just pathetic.

Anyway, like Unc, a few years ago I had experience with what sounds like a similar vent occurrence and the outcome wasn't good. That time it wasn't any fault of the medical people, though.

But this isn't about me, and Hamlin is getting only the best care, so fingers crossed.

You don't have to make everything about Covid conspiracies.

Personally, I'm not vaccinated because I didn't feel we had enough data on both the virus and the vaccine to put that into my body, but that doesn't mean Covid was some gigantic lie and that everything we see nowadays is a result of that virus or the vaccine.

And what Unc is referring to occurred LONG before COVID came around so his mistrust has absolutely nothing to do with that either.

Chill out, dude.

I was referring to a post about mistrusting the medical industry.

Listen, I watched my fucking father in law die in a hospital bed ON A FUCKING VENT that he didn't need to be on. I have found out since that they were doing that to almost everyone because of the bed shortages. Don't fucking talk to me about chilling out. I watched them shorten his life because of fucking laziness. I trust nothing in that industry anymore.

Conspiracies my fucking ass.

Skip Bayless is a true piece of shit. And, I don't think it just for show either, not anymore. He is just a piece of garbage.

A ventilator is a wildcard for sure. I get that it keeps people alive, but a lot of people don’t know a ventilator can kill you too.

You are right. You and I talked many times while my dad was in Houston. The big issue is that they have allowed the medical field to become a business. It’s a business first, and empathy compassion and caring last. This isn’t directed at the fine Drs and nurses who ARE about taking care of the patients. It’s about the people who control their paychecks and the bottom line.

It killed my father in law. And when I asked why he was put on it I was told they were instructed to do so for "comfort" reasons. No, you heartless fucking pieces of shit, you did it because he would clear the bed up faster and get you a Covid payout. I will most likely never trust the medical industry again. I'm not sure if he would have lasted any longer off the vent, but the vent damn sure solidified his death.
