2022 Cowboys Free Agency Thread

He is a good player who feels older than 28 because he has bounced around the league so much. I'd be good with Cooks though. But I'm not paying a hefty price for him. You want a fifth round pick, great. But if we are giving up more than we got for Cooper than I'd rather just draft a dude and roll. Cooks isn't a #1 WR and I'm not trading assets like he is.

I think he wanted to go back to safety .

He does but I think that's just because he thinks he is a great player. So his excuse is that he played out of position last year. Truth is he played where he did last season because he kind of sucks at safety.

No but he is a quality player who does his job with little drama. We will give an honest offer of a fifth and say we tried.

I don't even think that, because while we accept 5ths for guys like Cooper, we've historically offered 1sts for guys like Cooper.

I'd bet the issue on Cooks is his 16 million dollar salary and the fact that he won't take a pay cut to a medium diet Pepsi per year.

If we can get Cooks for like a 4th, or a 4th and change it'd be pretty solid. He's not a 1 but he's a very credible 2, and theoretically Lamb will be our 1.

Lamb/Gallup/Cooks is a very solid trio on paper and I could argue that it's actually superior to the Lamb/Cooper/Wilson trio we played most of last season, although that's pending Gallup's health. I'd also hope that we could get a short-term extension done with Cooks given that he only has a year left on his deal, giving up picks for a 1-year rental is definitely less than ideal.

For 16 mil it's like why didn't you just keep Cooper? Yes you can restructure Cooks but you could have restructured Cooper too. So it's why higher than a fifth is hard for me to stomach.

The Jones' inability to manage said Salary Cap/Free Agency is what has killed the team and its chances for success.

I dont think that's even true. They used to sign big ticket guys - Leonard Davis, Laroi Glover, Terrell Owens, Brandon Carr, etc.

In the past decade or so, they've stopped doing that. They've absolutely changed their tactics.

And honestly, it's been working better for them because they've replaced spending with drafting well.

To me the problem seems to be that they don't understand that there's a middle ground.

You can participate in free agency without spending like drunken sailors. You can push money into future years without risking future cap hell.

There are times to spend a little.

And in most cases you should be keeping and paying your contributors unless you have a better option to replace them with.

I think they'll be competitive next season. Maybe even win the division. But that's it. They aren't going any further than the first or second round of the playoffs with this roster unless they get super lucky in the draft or super lucky with their divisional round opponent.

And you cant rely on that, which is why we're sitting here without so much as a championship appearance in 27 years.

The problem isn't that they can't compete, it's that they refuse to do what it takes to get over the hump.

Spend a little. Round out the roster. Keep your elite WR. Keep your starting quality RT. Keep your options open. If you want to move on from a player, only move on if what you get back in return is more valuable than what you are giving up.

Next year will be ok.

Nah Jones ego killed the Cowboys. It's just been a multitude of shit that it set off since then that has helped us to continue to lose. Maybe if Jerry didn't breed, employ and groom his fucking kids to replace him we would have a glimmer of hope soon.
